Outstanding product
This is a wonderful piece of equipment and very easy to recommend . It scans Photographs and produces nice files at 300 dpi , 600 dpi and 1200 dpi. The speed at all levels is very fast but clearly slightly slower for big files. I found the software worked faster on a PC than on a Mac but both were amazingly fast compared with anything else I have used . The resulting copies can be duplicated and an enhanced version with colour and exposure correction can be produced . For example I scanned over 12000 files ( 6000 pictures ) over a few hours ( the rate is about 30 in 30 seconds but you have sometimes to wait for the software to clear the memory buffer.Document feeding is a dream and the Duplex system scans double sided documents with ease and at speed. Watch videos on Youtube to confirm this. Files can then be saved to a number of functions including Word documents which automatically reads them as an OCR document.Overall this is a dream machine if you want to archive documents , alter them or just save an archive of photographs in high quality at great speed. Not cheap but worth every penny.Recommended +++ Well done Epson !!

Very Good fast scanner
Had hundreds of photos to scan which would take a lifetime to do on a flatbed. This scanner is very fast and easy to set up and use. It has the option of scanning both sides if you have memos or info on the rear. There is an auto correction feature that gives you two scans. One original and one corrected. The correction copy I found In most scans was good and deleted the original. Very dark underexposed photos it struggled with, but doing manually on a photo editing software didn't improve them either. Very happy with the scanner and I am now using the document scan software which can also scan both sides to archive documents that have built up over years which can be saved in various formats. I originally purchased the epson v600 which was dead out of the box and sent it back hassle free. Now having this although bit more expensive I think this is the better choice.

Love it!
I purchased the ES-580W and it's a lovely looking device, and smaller than I thought it would be. I’ve actually put it on the front room next to a vase as I like looking at it. I often go to court to defend my data protection rights and this process generates a lot of paperwork. I've been using the Canon imageFormula P-150 for many years but I had so many issues with double-feeds that I have to feed each page in one by one. It did a good job though. So, the main criteria for this scanner was that it needed to have the technology to prevent double-feeds. I also liked the idea of scanning directly to USB without having to use my PC.I had it up and running within minutes and I was scanning to USB. I was a bit concerned at first because it started beeping every time I pressed a button on the screen and that would have done my head in but fortunately there’s an option to set the sound to zero. I’ve also figured out how to set my user settings – 600dpi, colour, PDF, single document, duplex. When I get any post now, all I need to do is turn it on, scan the letter to USB and shred it. It took about 10 minutes to scan a 30 page document and I think it is the saving to USB process that is slows it down. It’s not an issue though for someone who is used to scanning page by page. My mission now is to scan in everything stored in my three drawer metal filing cabinet. My only niggle so far is that the touch screen is a bit sensitive and therefore, difficult to scroll. For example, when I try to scroll down the menu I often select an option by mistake. This is not a big issue though as I’ve now saved my settings.

Scans well, but takes too long to open the software
What's the point of 1 second scans if it takes 60-90 seconds for the software to get going? Also, the scans are fast and good, but I still feel the need to increase the contrast a bit and apply sharpening. In other words, it's fast, but not as fast as you think.

Good and bad
As a document scanner this is brilliant. Super fast and very easy to use.As a photo scanner it has proved disappointing. Although fast, the problem of lines appearing on photos due to dust or dirt on the sensor is a problem. Selecting the option in the software to reduce the effect if lines results in totally unacceptable artifacts in the shadow areas of darker pictures.
