A Rubik’s Cube is a 3-D mechanical puzzle invented in 1974 by Hungarian sculptor and professor of architecture Ernő Rubik. Originally called the “Magic Cube”, the puzzle was licensed by Rubik to be sold by Ideal Toy Corp. in 1980 and won the German Game of the Year special award for Best Puzzle that year. As of January 2009, 350 million cubes had been sold worldwide making it the world's top-selling puzzle game. It is widely considered to be the world's best-selling toy. The standard 3×3×3 Rubik’s Cube has six faces, each of which is covered by nine stickers of different colours. A typical colour combination, on one face of a solved cube, would be white, red, blue, green, orange, and yellow. In its solved state, each colour sticker would touch another sticker of a different colour along each edge of a face. When the cube is taken apart and put back together again in a different configuration, it becomes jumbled and it is this challenge that has enthralled millions of people around the world. There are numerous websites, books, and videos detailing how to solve a Rubik’s Cube. The most popular method, used by an estimated 95% of solvers, is known as the Fridrich Method, developed by Jessica Fridrich. This involves solving the cube in a specific order: first the edges, then the corners, and finally the centres. This can be done in as little as 20 moves, but on average a solver will take around 50 moves to complete the cube. With practice, anyone can learn to solve a Rubik’s Cube quickly and efficiently.
