Beauty and the Beast Paperback – Picture Book, January 1, 1990

I am incredulous that such a consistently wonderful artist, who has brought so much pleasure to children and the people who read to or with them, has apparently never won the coveted Caldecott Award. In this lovely volume, she again produces a gorgeous work filled with charming detail. The text is a version of this folk tale with which I was not familiar, and I enjoyed reading it, as I am sure youngsters will. I found it less frightening than some other accounts of what transpired between Beauty and her Beast. Enthusiastically recommended.

Beauty and the Beast is one of my favorite fairy tales and this particular book is a nice alternative to the Disney version. I also appreciate that the beast isn't especially "scary" and looks more like an animal rather than a mutant. It's a children book that I actually enjoy reading with my girls. And although there is a lot of text on each page, both my 2 YO and my 4 YO are able to maintain interest--mainly because of the beautiful illustrations.

The illustrations in this book are just beautiful and there is one on every page. Costuming is historically correct and they are beautifully rendered. The text is quite simplistic though and definitely for the younger child 5 to 8. Read it in 15 minutes of less.

Jan Brett's Beauty and the Beast is one of my favorite fairy tale books that I have collected so far. I originally came across it in middle school and I have been enchanted with it ever since. It is rendered beautifully with period accurate 18th century clothing, exotic animals, and fantastic scenes. The story is very similar to the original French tale unlike the Disney version. It is a book that I would recommend for younger and older readers.

This is a beautiful book. My grandma used to read it to me when I was little. I've been searching for it for a while and was able to find it on Amazon. Thanks for helping me relive my childhood.

This book is gorgeous and has some interesting twists for those who are most familiar with the Disney version. My four-year-old daughter loves it and we are big fans of Jan Brett's beautifully illustrated children's stories, anyway.

Bought it for the grandchildren and they just loved it. The story was written in a way that was easy to understand and the illustrations were beautiful. It was appropriate for ages 3-7.
