To Lose My Life ...

I decided to come back to what i remembered as a good debut from dark rockers White Lies. Well i must say its an incredible album. Harry McVeigh's voice is magnificant, think a more powerful Ian Curtis. The drums sound powerful, the bass leads brilliantly and an eerie gothic feel surrounds the album.'Death', 'To Lose My Life' and 'Farewell To The Fairground' are as catchy as rock music can be. Each building to an epic ending. 'E.S.T' is my favourite song here, simply for its dark, brooding sense while still keeping its cool rockiness. 'From The Stars' describes the scene of a funeral and its aftermath, yet like many songs on display its dark lyrics are conveyed into an upbeat rocker. 'Fifty On Our Foreheads' reminds me a lot of a less guitar driven Interpol. While 'A Place To Hide' and 'Unfinnished Business' are both excellent. Both 'Nothing To Give' and 'The Price Of Love' show the quieter side of White Lies, both being slower, brooding songs to round off excellently.A top quality album, can only hope the boys next release is something more like this.

I am a big fan of Joy Division, Depeche mode etc. I found out about this band from playing Need for Speed Hot Pursuit on which they had a track called "Bigger than Us" I loved that track, so tried to find out more about the band. Unfortunately it seems "Bigger than Us" cannot be bought yet for some strange reason.I decided to buy the album after listening to the sound clips and was not dissapointed. I think every track on this album is strong. Although they claim to not have been influenced by Joy Division there is definately some resemblance in some of the tracks, but I guess it hard to be ultimatly unique these days.This is one of the strongest albums I have heard for a long time and I cannot wait to hear the next one.

I bought this as saw these guys at Leeds and enjoyed the show and this is a very good cd.Normally there are only a few songs on a cd that are good but this one is full of good catchy songs and is a good cd to have in the car for a long journey or something to play in the house in the background

Good

Love this cd I played it about ten times when I first got it . It has a slight 80's feel about it. It flows really well and all the tracks are good. there isn't one you want to fast forward.

Non sono un appassionato di rock o punk o altri generi simili, ma quando ho sentito i singoli dei White Lies me ne sono innamorato. Sono soprattutto le melodie che mi hanno conquistato, ma devo dire che anche gli arrangiamenti hanno qualche sfumatura originale, soprattutto il modo di suonare "a mitragliatrice" del batterista.... XDSu 10 canzoni non ce n'è una che mi dispiaccia. Se vi piacciono i singoli vi piaceranno tutte. La mia preferita credo che sia ancora quella che mi ha fatto comprare questo disco, "Death". A proposito di morte, essa viene tirata in ballo quasi in ogni testo, rendendo la parte "lirica" del disco molto oscura come le foto dell'artwork, seria e riflessiva, bellissima anch'essa.

Ritengo che questo possa esser considerato il miglior cd dei White Lies. Senza dubbio è quello che li ha resi famosi. Primo di tre album, "To Lose My Life" è caratterizzato da suoni che vanno a creare un' atmosfera oscura. La musica, che sa essere carica ma anche più dolce, è accompagnata dalle vocalità di Harry McVeigh che riesce nell'intento di trasformare il tutto ancora più dark. Un cd consigliatissimo e senza dubbio da acquistare, non vi deluderà.

Habe mir die CD gekauft um mal zu schauen was die Band sonst noch so macht außer den Songs die sie rausgebracht hat.Auf diesem Album war leider für mich persönlich nichts mehr herausragendes als die bekannten Songs wie To Lose My Life.Schade! :(

... dass einen die alte Tante SZ" an eine Platte bringt, auch wenn das sicher nicht die Intuition eines Artikels mit der Übrschrift Leider lauwarm" war. Man sollte sich aber von dem Verriß, der über die üblichen nervtötenden Vergleiche zu Postpunk-Epigonen wie Joy Division kaum hinauskommt, nicht abschrecken lassen. Die White Lies haben eine ganz passable Platte hinbekommen, für Freunde der Schublade verortet zwischen den frühen Killers und den Editors. Wenn denn ein Verweis auf die 80er unbedingt hermuß, dann sollte es aber schon wegen des schwelgerischen Pathos in Richtung Ultravox gehen, was ja eine so schlechte Adresse auch nicht ist. Tatsächlich erinnert Sänger Harry McVeigh bei seinen stimmlichen Höhenflügen des öfteren an Midge Ure, mal blitzt ein wenig Vienna", dann wieder Dancing With Tears ..." durch. Fast alle Songs haben Hymnencharakter, hervorzuheben vielleicht der raue Titelsong To Lose My Life" oder das schaurig schöne Nothing To Give". Alles in allem: Schwarz schattiert, aber schön anzuhören ...

... and I know it's mine.Je öfter ich das Album höre, desto besser finde ich es. Manche Songs sind ein bisschen eintönig, wie "From the Stars" - da singt Harry McVeigh die Terz rauf und runter und wieder rauf usw. ... auch "Nothing To Give" zündet nicht so bei mir. Aber es sind echt gute Titel auf dem Album: "Death", "To Lose my Life", "Farewell to the Fairground" oder "Unfinished Business", da gefällt mir besonders der Refrain und "E.S.T." klingt wie eine richtige 80er Jahre-Hymne.Schöner, voller Gitarrensound, die Jungs von White Lies sind echt cool. Klar - ich bin auch ein 80er Fan, wie sollte es anders sein, und nun geb ich auch noch zum Besten, was ich so hineininterpretiere und raushöre: The Stranglers (den Sound), Ultravox (die Stimme), und ein bisschen Duran Duran (den Text).

Ich habe mir aufgrund der doch überwiegend positiven Bewertungen vermeintlich blind dieses Album zugelegt. Ich bin ein großer Fan von Interpol, Editors, The National, den hierzulande noch weniger bekannten Dragons oder alten Heros wie Joy Division.Wem auch nur eine dieser Bands annähernd gefällt, kann bedenkenlos zugreifen! Ich will nicht sagen, dass die White Lies besser sind, sie sind anders, wirken wie ein Best Of aus vielen Bands und kommen doch sehr eigenständig daher. Atmosphärisch extrem dicht, melancholisch, romantisch, aber nie kitschiger Sound mit einer sensationellen Stimme besetzt.Dieser Kauf war ein absoluter Volltrefer und gehört zu den Highlights des Jahres.Meine Anspieltipps, nicht die Single-Auskopplungen, sondern die weitaus umwerfenderen Songs "Nothing To Give" und "The Price Of Love" - der absolute Hammer! Diese beiden Nummern erhalten 11 von 10 Punkten, der Rest grundsätzlich 8-10 von 10.

Geklaut oder nicht, Anleihen bei den großen Bands oder nicht, egal! Am Ende steht eine LP (denn nur die Vinyl-Version ist auch wirklich authentisch), die fünf Sterne absolut verdient hat. Super Spannungsbögen in einer grundsoliden düsteren Atmosphäre, sehr schön produziert ohne zugekleistert zu sein, so soll es sein. Für ein Erstlingswerk ein beachtlicher Tonträger. Ich bin gespannt was White Lies noch abliefern werden, wenn das nur der Anfang war.

Sehr gutes Album

Eines der besten Bands, die ich kenne. Ich kenne sie nur, weil ich mir damals DiRT2 gekauft habe, da war nämlich der Track "To Lose My Life" drauf. Jeder einzelne Song unterscheidet sich von den anderen, jedoch ist jeder Song auch eine Granate für sich. Diese Band hat mich auch während meiner Grundausbildung begleitet und hat mich jedesmal auf's Neueste motiviert. Also, ich kann diese Band jedem wärmstens empfehlen

Diese CD ist einfach ein Ohrwurm und eine extravagante Musikrichtung, die ihresgleichen sucht. Als ich den Titel "To lose my life" in SWR3 hörte, war dies für mich Anlaß, das Album zu bestellen. Und ich wurde nicht enttäuscht. Man vergisst den Alltag und schwebt mit dieser Musik in eine andere Sphäre.

Hatte hier nur mal kurz reingeschnuppert - mir dann die CD bestellt - und .... war begeistert - ein bisschen 80'er Musik auf heute gemünzt - ich finde - sehr gelungen!!!
