Take and Read: Spiritual Reading -- An Annotated List

It is exactly as described in the title an annotated reading list for spiritual reading. I would recommend especially for those interested in classic Christian writings.

It's all the books that have inspired Eugene Peterson, and if you've been inspired by Peterson's writings, you're sure to find many selections in here to fill your heart and bookshelf. After starting this book, within a few hours I purchased Gregory the Great's Book of Pastoral Rule and Von Balthasar's book simply titled Prayer. Gregory is an even more powerful writer than Pastor Peterson.If you know how much Eugene Peterson treasures the wise voices available in the written word, you want to have this annotated list.

This book has a list of books that have molded Peterson over time. Be warned, some of them are not for the person looking for a quick read.

Wished I'd have read this sooner, but tracked down a kindle copy after Peterson mentioned this book in Eat This Book. Take and Read is a compilation of Peterson's recommendations of resources on the psalms, prayers, hymnals, commentaries ...but it is not just a list. (after all, this is Eugene Peterson! hooray!) One may wish there were more titles or perhaps different titles, but this is Peterson's list and he explains how each has made their mark on his life with God. A sweet little treasure that seemed to transition well into a Kindle version - easily maneuvered and complete.

Since I have read and gained from Eugene Peterson's books, I wanted to know what he has read and how these books have influenced his thinking and shaped his understanding of God and all things Christian. Peterson is a scholar and therefore his readings include many categories and a variety of ideas. The annotation of his readings helped me understand him as well as his writings. I am grateful for this book and gave it to several discerning friends for Christmas presents.

This is a great book to lead you to other great books. I have increased my list of books to read. I enjoyed it.

If you love books and enjoy reading about what other great writers read, this book is a gem. It contains thoughtful and interesting commentary on books that influenced the great scholar, author and clergyman Eugene Peterson, editor and translator of the popular Message Bible.

Content is great.

As a stand-alone book this is hard to review as it is simply a long list of books that Christians should read with descriptions as to why and an introductory few paragraphs for each category of books. That said, as a resource, this book is pure gold and points to pure gold. I found my “to-read” list get bigger as I was reading!
