For the doubters - this is ACTUALLY worth it.
I had to buy this book for a class on grammar. The price tag seemed a little ridiculous, but as a college student, I'm used to books being overpriced. I figured it would just be shelf decoration...I mean, I speak English, who needs a whole book on grammar?Well, I quickly found out that I do. It's actually an incredibly well laid out reference, complete with tabs and great indexing and examples. And a COMPANION WEBSITE. That, to be honest, is the best part. The ability to practice what is being taught is priceless, and really helps cement the knowledge dropped by Hacker in those thin yet fruitful pages.I avoided buying this book for years because of the price and I figured I could just find the answers to any questions I had about correct usage on the internet or in a cheaper reference book (like the Elements of Style). But A Writer's Reference is WAY more comprehensive and detailed than the The Elements of Style (which is still fantastic in its own right), and the internet is always kind of...patchy, getting a half definition here and a couple examples there. It's really helpful to have something explained comprehensively, and then be pointed to a website where you can practice what you just learned.Even if you're not an editor or something, it's worth having if anything you do relates to writing, even if it's just emailing.

Superb!
This book is always near my work station. As an educator and copyeditor, I refer to it frequently. Highly recommended as a resource (or learning tool) for students or professionals in a variety of fields.

Keep It After Your Class Ends!
I purchased this as required for an upper level writing class a couple semesters ago and sold it after the class ended. I regretted it shortly after. This is an excellent source for APA, MLA, and Chicago Style. Yes, there are websites out there to use, but when writing a paper, it is so handy to be able to quickly flip through this and find exactly what you need in seconds -- with samples, etc. Less fumbling and much more visual and easier to use than websites. The last couple semesters, I checked it out from the university library because it seems the classes bounce between APA, MLA, and Chicago pretty quickly and this covers all. It is getting more difficult to borrow long term and I have 12 classes to go, so I am re-investing in a copy to ensure I always have it on hand. This book will help ensure you don't lose points for silly citation and format errors! Keep it once you order it -- do not sell it back!

used for school
we have to buy this book for school. if you have to buy it for school, i would recommend getting it here in amazon not the bookstore. i appreciate the bookstore, but i appreciate keeping my money for food more.the book is very easy to understand and not too wordy. there is a glossary you can read which tells you all the right uses for words that everyone who reviews books misspells.

My go to resource for APA/MLA Citation...
Sure, there are a number of online resources and applications that will assist with citations. Though I also like to ensure I understand the appropriate expectations on the various methods and elements of citations typically applied at the college level. This is a thorough and awesome resource that is both complete and able to be navigated with ease. It was required for one of my first college courses and am grateful we crossed paths. If you are looking for a book on citing any of the available sources in the various formats, you can't go wrong with this classic.

Great handbook for college
This handbook is excellent for all college students, and just anyone in general. If you frequently write papers or have to take many english classes this book comes in handy. It has lots of information about writing research papers and how to properly format and edit your paper, and it really helped me. It is one of the few required materials I enjoyed as a purchase, and I can really say it helps you even afterwards, so hold on to this little guide!

Okay
This book had a weird smell to it when I purchased it, so I had to spray it everyday for like a week to get the smell out. The book was a little bit worse than described because the cover was really worn and some pages were bent.

Required for College Students
As a professor at a U.S. university, I recommend this text in every course I teach. You cannot effectively communicate ideas if you cannot write. Knowing fundamentals of writing, then applying standardized writing styles is an essential skill that will not only get students though a college program, but will make them indispensable to future employers.I've used every edition of Hacker's Writer's Reference and have found no other text that is as useful to my students. Of course, they can always purchase the style manual associated with their major field of study, but that won't cover the styles and guides needed to write in courses outside of that major.
