Bought for an old monitor
My CPU has HDMI but my aging monitor only accepts VGA. So this adaptor allows me to run the video from the computer HDMI port to the monitor and split off the audio signal to external speakers. Very convenient!

My Laptop Headphone jack to external speakers was flakey, This solves it - No More Missing channel
My Laptop Headphone jack to external speakers was flakey, Never knew when the sound would be mono or missing the right channel - This solves that - No More Missing right channel, as the sound nows comes out the vai HDMI port to 3.5 mm output jackI had already moved my Laptop video out to a VGA connector - which just hung on, to the laptop not using the screws, knowing one day it would fall out / offThis also solves that - the connector screws onand the HDMi plugs in soldly - so I am now setJust remember this active adapter requires a Micro USB cable connection to power itEnjoy !! This is so GREAT !

It works
It's small and it gets the job done. It does have a micro-USB input on the side, but this won't be needed for most devices. It's there to allow the adapter to be compatible with certain low-power HDMI devices that wouldn't work otherwise, but for most people, it's pretty much plug and play and the USB isn't needed. Works like a charm on my M1 mac.

bought for switch, have to do a bit of fine tuning
i got this adapter to connect my switch to my solo computer monitor. it works, but takes a bit of adjusting. I do wish the cable was a bit longer like the VGA to thunderbolt one I have from amazonbasics. This one barely fits the back of the switch and I feel that it will wear quicklyi have the HP W2071d monitor and when i first connected it to the switch i got an error saying to change the picture quality. i am not sure if it is for my monitor( kind of old) or other ones but the max quality i can set it up to is 720p, not the max 1080 that the switch can handle.also, keep in mind that if the image appears to not fit the screen, go to the monitor settings and image control and manually adjust where you want the projection to be(initial image was small and out of center and after adjusting made it about 99% of my screen)maybe if i got the reverse(vga to hdmi) i wouldn't have this problem but there is still a good picture quality.also, the sound jack works great too. connect your speakers or headphones and you are good.all in all, my problems are most likely user error and not the product.

works great
We had to buy 3 different one to get the right unit that work with a Dell. This unit works with Dell.

Worked fine for about 3 months of occasional use
I purchased this adapter to use with an older monitor that only has VGA and DVI ports. I wanted to be able to utilize both ports so I could have two devices - my PC and my work MacBook Pro - always connected to the monitor without having to unplug cables (I never used my PC and MBP at the same time so it was fine that they shared one monitor). Unfortunately, the adapter stopped working after about 3 months of occasional use. It's not an expensive adapter, but if I have to keep buying a new one every 3 months, then the costs will quickly surpass that of the costs for a good quality adapter or cable.[edit]I realized that I forgot to add that I did multiple tests using a MacBook Pro with a working HDMI port to verify that the adapter was the problem - I tried different HDMI cables that I verified works with a different monitor (that has an HDMI port) and I then tried the adapter on a different monitor that has a VGA port. No dice. It's this AmazonBasics adapter that is broken. :'(

Make sure that it works for your computer 1st
Order this for my son, but you have to have the same brand in order to work. Did notice that, and totally did check with him. Found out later that it doesn't work for his tv and monitor.

Great budget adapter
Took a chance on this adapter (desperately needed one to work from home) and am definitely happy with it. My work laptop has HDMI only and the only monitor I have at home is vga only. Plugged it in and worked right away. If you're going from vga to HDMI, you'll want to have a micro USB cable to power it, but it's not necessary going from HDMI to vga. Worth the 8 bucks!
