The Essential Facts
All I wear is tee shirts. Okay, to be clear, I usually wear pants - shorts to be precise. I’m not a button down kind of guy. I wear tees from morning to night and sometimes all night, so I wear them out pretty fast. So I’m always here buying more, usually six at a time. I can’t see spending fifty bucks for one brand name shirt when I can get Amazon Essentials that are made in the same factories for a fraction of the price. But the pre-selected sixpacks almost always end up with one or even two colors I don’t want.THE ESSENTIAL SECRETDid you know that there are more than just one selection of their store brand shirts? They don’t make the subtle differences exactly clear so I had to filter by several factors to get a side by side comparison and even then sometimes a shirt of a different color or size can be made in an entirely different factory or even country for that matter. I narrowed it down to three listings, all called Essentials and all so similar it takes some effort to see how they are different. Pocket or no pocket? Moisture wicking or not? Slim fit or regular? Things like that. Most selections came in packs of two. And for a reason I will never understand, if I picked one color they were unbelievably inexpensive but another shade could be as much as double the price.THE REALITYSo they all fit me about the same, yes the slim fit was slightly snugger than the regular but not by much. But here’s the thing that they don’t mention anywhere yet it is extremely important- some of the shirts were as much as three inches shorter than some others, or was it the other way around? This can spell the difference between a display of crack or not with some of my jeans.YES NO MAYBEOf the 3 sets of tees I chose, all from different listings of the same brand these were All I wear is tee shirts. Not As Slim As You Might Expect
As someone who's pushing 6'3" and 175lbs (most of that being around the mid-region), I was really debating between getting this shirt in large or the regular/loose fit in a medium. So I got both! And if I'm being honest, there wasn't very much of a difference. While this shirt in a medium (which I also bought) did feel tight, the large met with my broad shoulders perfectly and didn't get too slim as it went down along my chest and stomach (though the advertising photo makes it look like it totally just becomes a "V" towards the crotch). The regular-fit medium had a very similar fit, but was about a half inch shorter in vertical length and an inch shorter across the shoulders. Though it didn't slim as it went down like the slim-fit large, it's already shorter width made it feel like a tighter fit. Weird, right?? I tried on both shirts again and again, both before and after a single wash/dry, trying to point out all the differences before I came here to write about it here. All in all, I'm probably going to keep the slim-fit large as it actually has the shoulder length I like while not staying that length all the way down and giving off a total box-y fit. The slim-fit medium was just too small and the regular-fit medium was just a little too narrow, though I believe a regular-fit large would probably be too wide. One complaint of all the shirts that I'll have is that after a wash/dry, the hems at the bottom of the shirt did begin to curl up a bit, which is disappointing because it looks cheap (which I know it is, but other people don't). But other than that, I didn't detect any shrinkage and that's a huge plus given the price.

Not as good as the Russell Athletic Pocket Tee but close, slightly off proportions, I bought more.
I've been purchasing and wearing Russell Athletic Pocket Tee shirts for many years. They're comfortable, they look good, the fit was right in every way. I needed some replacement tees early this year and couldn't find any of the Russells except at truly exorbitant prices and never in my size. I tried a couple of different shirts and was unhappy with them all, they were all the same price or higher as what I used to pay for Russells but the quality wasn't as good and the fit was never quite right.I read the reviews here, especially the review by "Shea" who favorably compared this Amazon Essentials-brand pocket tee to the Russell. So I bought a couple to try them out. They look good, are comfortable, the pocket is fine, construction looks good. The length of the sleeves is perfect, fit around chest and gut are perfect; but the collar is wider and the tails are longer than the Russells, these shirts could lose 2 inches from the tails (the length of the waist) and at least 1 inch of circumference around the neck. Maybe I should try one size smaller? Maybe but I'm afraid the sleeve length would be too short for me.They wash up well and dry in the dryer without trouble (unlike some other shirts I tried which took forever to dry). They seem to be shedding a lot of lint in the dryer, though – I hope that doesn't mean they are going to wear out fast. So: As good as my Russells? No. Better than any other short-sleeve pocket tee in this price range that I've tried? Yes. And since the Russells seem to be gone for good, I bought more of these shirts. They're not perfect but I guess they just don't make 'em like they used to, or in the case of the Russell Athletic Pocket Tee, they don't make 'em at all anymore.
