Kirk SmockGuyana (Bradt Travel Guide)

Not user friendly
Sorry Bradt but this guidebook is horrible . There is major information missing (for example, often price ranges that would be extremely helpful to know aren’t given). Maps are useless. No tips on culture (what not to do) or language (a Creole saying / word section would have been nice ). No specifics about holidays - like where to find Carnaval activities or join EID celebrations. And too often how to get too and from a place listed is just omitted. For example the guide lists a wine bar and creek to visit outside of Georgetown but just says it’s on the highway about 50 minutes from town. It would be nice to follow this with - take bus # ?? Or a taxi will cost about $ ?? We’ve spent about a month now in Guyana and i found google to be more helpful.

a book for party people, not for serious explorerers of the country
The book was written for people who want a place to party, not for people who want to seriously learn about the plants, and animals in Guyana.

Best Pre-COVID (2018) Guide to a Guyana that needs & can reward tourists
Of course, given this is now 4 years old and pre-COVID, June 2018, one has no idea how accurate it remains. BUT this was likely as good as it gets in any work about travelling seriously all over Guyana and for that it gets 5 stars. The work fits the Bradt Guide template perfectly. Covering all the bases and with lots of good maps. The book really shines in the jungle, mountain and savannah sections, a bit more so than the major cities. For the cities, I feel the work is better at hotels, shopping, and restaurants than getting into the weeds of historical or interesting sights and sites to see & do there. But it does them, too.My ONLY complaint is in regard to Georgetown, the capital. I recently used Margaret Hebblethwaite's Bradt Guide-Paraguay for a 2-week trip there, including 6 nights in Asuncion, the capital. Margaret does a great job showing how to do a fantastic walking trip of the historic old part, where my hotel was located. I went about 16 blocks north-south and 30 blocks east-west walking all Asuncion, following the trail she sets out. There is NO such specific trail or route(s) to do walking tours of Georgetown. I plan on spending some nights & days there when I go in the future. So, I think I can piece together one by myself from the map and discussions of what is there, but it would've been truly outstanding to have a nice walking route to explore the capital on your own.Another home run for an out-of-the-way off-the-beaten path nation that needs tourism and has so much to offer tourists.

Umfassende Information - seh hilfreich
