Strawberry 'Hapil' Fast Growing Mid Season Bare Root Garden Fruit Plants (10 Plants)

4 of the plants were dead and decomposing on arrival, but the rest appear to be lovely and healthy so not too bothered. Nearly all of them have put out a new leaf since planting, so fingers crossed they continue to thrive.

I think in this case picture says more than words. I know strawberries are versatile and can grow back from a bit of root, but still I was expecting to see at least 1 leaf in my delivery. Came packaged in a bag envelope, which was mangled, ripped in transit and squeezed into my postbox. Is a bunch of roots worth £6? You decide. I have added 1 star because it came before time, and 1 star because I will still be able to save them with some TLC, at least roots are good and not rotten.

Yes, it’s true, they come in a floppy plastic mailer bag, and don’t look like much at first – there was maybe 1 tiny bit of green at the top of all the roots, about a centimetre of pale green on one piddly stem, not nearly as much foliage as pictured (6th pic on current Amazon listing?), but probably better that way – you don’t need the leaves taking any energy away from the roots whilst the plants are in transit. Anyway, I ordered these Hapils on 9th May 2020, received them around 13th/14th May and got them straight into water for a few hours, then into some multipurpose compost, in a few of my empty cardboard 3L wine boxes (lined with supermarket carrier bags), taking care to make sure the ‘crown’ of the plant stood just a little bit proud of the compost’s surface. To my amazement, new green foliage started appearing within 24 hours. It’s now 7-ish weeks later and I’ve got my first 5 lovely Hapil strawbugs turning deep red, and approx. 15 more berries (per plant, apart from the one I’m going to tell you about in a minute) on the way! I was so encouraged by how well these little guys performed, I ordered 10 ‘Sweetheart’ plants from the same seller, which are now potted up in some re-purposed 2L plastic drinks bottles and doing fabulously well. For everyone who’s complained they don’t come with instructions, there is a thing called “Google”, right? I’ve never grown strawberries before in my life, but you just look up what you need to! One word of advice from me, though: As an experiment, I potted one of the Hapils in Coco Coir ( I added extra nutrients, as coco coir doesn’t contain any nourishment in it for plants), but this one doesn’t seem to be setting nearly as much fruit as the others (which were planted in either a John Innes #3, or whatever other compost I could find on Amazon at the time!). And don’t forget to feed them when they start to flower, a bit of Tomorite liquid feed or anything higher potash/lower nitrogen seems to do the trick and will boost your yield. And snip off the runners that emerge (unless you want to try and develop more strawberry plants from them yourself), because the runners are just diverting energy away from fruit production. Will defo be ordering from this seller again! p.s. They taste YUM! Perfect strawb flavour. Brilliant, very, VERY pleased :-)

I ordered 5 of the bare root strawberries, they arrived in a plastic bag, I soaked them in water for 24 hours and then planted in a hanging container, I made sure the crown was not buried, it's been about 3 weeks since I planted them and so far only 1 has survived.

COMING BACK YEAR AFTER YEAR, I PLANT MINE IN HANGING BAGS PLENTY OUT THERE, OR HANGING BASKETS WITH THE SEPERATE SECTIONS. OR THE PLASTIC HANGIBG GRO BAG CUT A CROSS FILL ONLY TO LEVEL OF EACH CROSS THEN FROM OUTSUDE GENTLY EASE THE ROOTS IN CONTINUE FILLING BAG WITH COMPOST AS YOU GO UP LEVELS TO PLANT. THEN ADD ONNME PLANT ON THE TOP. DO NOT PUSH THE SOIL DOWN DURING PLANTING KEEP LOOSE LET IT SETTLE NATURALLY, THESE PRODUCE NICE SMALL MED SWEET STRAWBERRIES I LIKE THEM BEST PICKED AS REQUIRED WHEN WARM AND ALSO A BIT PAST THE HARVEST THEY ARE SWEETER IMO.THEY WILL DIE BACK TO NOTHING , LOOK AWFYP & I TAKE THE BAGS DOWN LEAVE IN SHED (DO ABSOLUTELY NOTHING, UNTIL NEXT MARCH THEN HANG THEM FEED THE SOIL AND WITHIN DAYS IF NOT ALREADY SHOWING, LJTTLE GREEN SHOOTS WILL EMERGE) SO DO NOT THROW AWAY, THEY RETURN YEAR AFTER YEAR. I have grown strawberries before and never had a problem. These died within 3 weeks. I wouldn’t recommend them
