Boom NOT Heavy Duty, Base is... Flimsy and Useless Tightening Mechanism(s)
This Mic Boom assembly included with the package is terrible. The base is of Heavy Duty stature, yet the boom is cheap and thin material that comes pre-bent for you. The Boom arm that is supposed to be extendable is difficult to extend due to the bent rod inside. I have read many reviews of this item being bent pre-sale. Mine was no different. The metal clamping mechanism for the overall boom extension (the one that attaches the boom to the stand) is impossible to torque down enough to prevent the arm from slowly falling to it slowest point with evan a lightweight microphone on its end. On to the actual boom arm itself, it's metal clamps are useless. The tightening mechanism is tiny and slick making tightening almost impossible. It will in no way prevent the rod from spinning in its housing causing any positioned microphone to slump. I tried everything even overtightening, to no avail. The boom arm compared to the durability of the base seems like two different parts stuck together to give you something they could call "heavy duty" when in fact it is not. I expect the tightening mechanism to fail almost immediately on initial use as mine did in an attempt to get the item to work at all.

Not Bad, But Not Terribly Impressive
Is it a bad stand? No. Not at all. It is seriously heavy duty and mostly high quality materials. However I was a bit disappointed in the quality of the brakes which seem to need to be tightened quite a bit just to support the weight of the stand itself, let alone while holding mic on at full extension. Also worth mentioning that the telescopic portion of my stand came with a very slight bend-- not enough to affect performance, but enough to cause a small but noticeable amount of resistance when extending or twisting the telescopic arm.So in short, this seems to be a very durable stand, but its durability seems to come at a small cost to its utility, especially with proportion to its weight.

Great solid mic stand
Great solid mic stand. I researched a variety of mic stands in this price range and decided to go with the 'MS9701TBPLUS Platinum Series Tele-Boom Microphone Stand'. It was a little tricky to make sure I ordered the correct one, being that the model numbers are very similar to one another. So far this stand has worked out great. It has good weight to it so that it plants itself nicely on the floor with no worries of it tipping over even with some of my heavier condenser mics that I use. The telescopic boom portion is great and allows me to set this up any way I want. While I didn't measure it's maximum height, I'm guessing that it's close to seven feet tall when fully extended allowing you to place a mic overhead. Or, you can set it low so that the mic is three to four feet or lower from the floor. I will buy another one of these if needed.

telescoping stand and couldn't be happier. I can put an SM58 on the stand ...
After using fairly cheap unweighted stands for the past few years, I was very frustrated with stands constantly tipping over. I purchased this weighted, telescoping stand and couldn't be happier. I can put an SM58 on the stand and extend it out to full extension anywhere in the 360 degree range of the boom without it tipping or getting unsteady in the least. I love this stand. I may have to have it buried with me when I die, or maybe I'll pass it on to another musician friend so the greatness of this stand can live on in perpetuity,

I really like it!
I've been in bands for the past 20 years and have always relied on the cheap $20 stands that strip out and break. Ive been using a talk box and have the boom stretched over my guitar pedal board so the stand either starts to droop or just wants to lean and tip into me. Not any more! The new stand is wicked heavy, the clutch is all metal, and its rugged enough that I can now attach a side adapter bracket for my tablet so I don't have to bring a music stand to gigs. It's totally worth the $50 to have a heavy duty mic stand that I know will last. I really like it!

... the heavy duty stands hoping they would hold up better then the cheap ones
I bought the heavy duty stands hoping they would hold up better then the cheap ones. But that has not been the case, 2 of them the bottom wing nut to lock the tripod comes loose but the screw is still tight so unless you have a pair of pliers handy at a gig you won't be able to loosen the set screw. Then I noticed the other day that 1 is loose at the crimp/weld where the boom meets the straight stand! Not to happy so far, think I've used em for 4 gigs so far.... They are heavy stands, I like the metal clutch on the height adjustment but still seem weak in other areas. Hope this helps future buyers out.

Worth the money.
A big step up from a basic mic stand. Kills the sway and flimsy feel of basic stands. Well worth the price. The construction has more metal and the adjustments are smother in function.

Go for a better quality one if you have a heavy microphone and shockmount setup if you have the budget.
I gave this a 4 out of five because this doesn't quite work for my setup. I am a Let's Play commentator and the arm isn't quite strong enough to hold an Audio Technica AT-2020 and a Samson SPO1 Spider5 Shockmount at full extension with the built in counterweight. It starts to slowly drop even when seemingly over tightened (so much so that I don't want to try to tighten it more out of fear of stripping the threads) at full extension. So not super impressed but I have made it work. I haven't tried this yet but I am pretty sure I could not have it drop at full extension if I add some more counterweight in the form of some sand or dirt in a jug attached the opposite end, haven't tried it yet though.
