Maxell MXSB 252 Digital SoundBase TV Speaker

Having recently moved to a larger house, we upgraded to a larger TV also (Philips 39" LED, bought from Richer Sounds).Whilst the sound quality is adequate, we decided to invest in a budget sound bar seeking greater clarity and depth.I spent many days researching the options on this and other sites and eventually settled for the Maxell which does not appear to be widely available. I could find no English reviews of this sound bar and finally considered Google translations of a number of German websites. Whilst the translations were a little hit and miss, nevertheless the reviews were all positive.The features that attracted me to the Maxell are:1. I liked the design and the fact that the TV sits on top of the sound bar. (4 soft rubber cushions are supplied which you fix on top of the sound bar to reduce any possible vibration). Whilst there are similar cheaper options available, they did not appear to be as robust nor have as wide a range of connection options.2. Both the TV and sound bar are ARC compatible so that they can be connected by a single HDMI cable. (I bought the Amazon Basics high speed cable which is also ARC compatible). None of the other budget sound bars have this capability which I particularly wanted - the prevailing view appears to be that HDMI connection gives the best quality sound. It also means that you can control volume from the TV remote and only need to use the sound bar remote to select from the various options.3. It was within budget at £120.4. It has many connection options, in the event that I ever decide to get into gaming etc.The Maxell has limited scope for fine tuning the sound which may put some people off but I suspect this applies to most cheaper products.As to the actual experience, well the service from Smartgear was excellent - it arrived within 48 hours rather than the advertised 5 to 7 days. It was easy to set up. It certainly enhances the sound - the tinny reproduction of the TV speakers is already a distant memory - and the surround sound setting does introduce a cinematic quality, albeit not on the scale of top of the range sound systems.All in all, highly recommended.UPDATE December 2013Having been very happy with the 252, a couple of months ago it stopped delivering any sound! My tv pop-up indicated that the sound bar was active, and the sound bar responded to instructions from the remote but was silent. I checked all the connections and tried rebooting it without success.So I contacted the retailer (Smartgear) via Amazon's website. Smartgear responded by phone within a couple minutes of my e-mail and after discussion decided to put me in direct contact with Maxell and to monitor progress. Maxell made a number of suggestions, none of which worked so it was agreed that my unit was faulty. They asked me to return the unit direct to them for checking, and assuming the fault was confirmed, would offer either a refund or replacement.Eventually, the unit was confirmed as faulty. Rather than a direct replacement, Maxell have agreed that I can upgrade to their new 3000 sound bar (paying the difference in cost). I would happily have accepted a direct replacement for the 252 had the new model not been available but am attracted to the 3000 model because of its bluetooth connectivity but mainly because of its enhanced power. i expect to receive the 3000 shortly.Obviously, this course of events was disappointing but I do feel that I was just unlucky. The procedure leading up to the eventual replacement was a little slow (partly down to me) but throughout both Smartgear and Maxell were clearly doing their best to resolve the problem to my satisfaction. I will review the 3000 once I have had an opportunity to test it.

This was purchased on Amazon Market Place, and arrived, well packed, the day after it was ordered. It was heavy and appeared to be well constructed. As many others have mentioned, the instruction manual is awful and the diagrams can not be read without a magnifying glass. The rubber isolating pads supplied to support the TV are difficult to place because TV stands are mostly hollow, so precise measuring was required. (Are they really necessary?) The very small remote control was poor and the dark blue markings on the black background almost impossible to read, except in a strong light. I connected my Blue Ray player, BT Vision box and my Starpad tablet to the HDMI inputs on the unit. My Toshiba TV had no audio return channel on it's HDMI input, and had a digital audio output but no optical digital output. The Maxell unit has an optical digital input but no digital audio input. So I connected the TV using RCA cables, and switched the TV to external ampllfier and speakers. Everything worked with the Blue Ray player and the BT Vision box, but the Starpad did not, although it works fine connected straight to the TV. There was a serious problem with the sound from the TV though, in that the 'auto off' function on the Maxell unit switched the unit off every time after four minutes, and the TV sound came back on! The manufacturer is obviously aware of the problem since the instruction manual tells you, when using the RCA analog input, to combat this by turning up the TV sound input. But this did not work. This problem is a design fault since there is no way to isolate this function, as on some other products. How did it sound? Well it was different but no better than the sound on my TV. As for being 70 watts total output, no way. In fact, the 10 watts total output (2 x 5 watts) of my TV was capable of equivalent sound levels, and more bass, with the bass boost control in operation. I arranged to return the item within a week on the grounds of it's incompatibility and I have replaced it with the Denon under TV soundbar. It was two and a half times the price, and more than the TV, but well worth it. The sound quality (and volume) is far better. I would not recommend this Maxell product and I am surprised by the review ratings it has achieved.

After reading a number of reviews on this I decided to go for it, I am glad I did. The Soundbase looks great under the TV and keeps everything looking neat and tidy. Sound is very good, maybe not for a Sound connoisseur, but perfect for everyday use and watching movies.The setup is key but simple so I hope this helps people.Both the TV and sound bar are ARC compatible so that they can be connected by a single HDMI cable (remember the HDMI cable needs to have ARC capabilities). You need to connect the HDMI socket marked ARC (usually HDMI 1) on the TV to the OUT HDMI socket on the Soundbase. I have an LG TV so this is specific to LG. On the TV you choose External Speaker (Optical/HDMI ARC) and select PCM on the digital sound out setting (accessed through the input menu). The LG has something called Simplink (accessed through the input menu again), this has to be set On with the Auto Power also set on. Sound came through perfectly and a swap from TV Speaker to External Speaker really shows the difference. When the TV goes on there is a slight delay whilst the Soundbase kick in but we are talking 2 seconds. The TV remote now controls nearly everything, TV on/off, Soundbase on/off, volume, the only functions not controlled are the bass and SRS levels on the Soundbase that you need to use the provided control for and then leave alone.All in all excellent product for the money, I paid about £89!

Beh, che dire, provato per un paio d'orette appena arrivato e posso fare queste considerazioni:1 - Non è una soundbase per puristi del suono o per chi cerca una qualità eccelsa, ma è di un buon livello e fa apprezzare benissimo l'audio di un film e rende piacevole l'ascolto anche di musica, ovviamente attraverso la TV (in assenza di BT). Il suono è caldo e, per quanto è sottile, sprigiona dei bassi corposi, pur non coprendo troppo le frequenze alte.2 - La qualità tecnica e quella costruttiva non sono certo ai livelli di Sonos (tanto per citare una marca che fa una soundbase che costa 800€), ma per i soldi spesi - poco più di 120€ - non penso ci sia di meglio. Siamo sui livelli di Bose, tanto per intenderci, solo i materiali sono un pelino più economici.3 - L'estetica è questione soggettiva, certo, ma dalla forma un po' sinuosa a conchiglia si nota che siamo sotto il livello di altre soundbase più costose, dalle linee più definite e minimal. Va detto, però, che chi compra questa soundbase non lo fa per accoppiarla ad un TV top livel.Ciò detto, ne consiglio caldamente l'acquisto perché qualsiasi cosa riprodurrà la vostra TV, con questa soundbase la apprezzerete molto di più!

Ich war schon länere Zeit immer wieder mal auf der Suche nach einer Soundbar für den Fernseher meiner Eltern.Der von ihnen angeschafte LED-Fernseher klingt nämlich wirklich sehr blechern.Aufgrund der Möbel (Der Fernseher steht da in einer Vor-Flachbildschirm-Ära angefertigten Schrankkombination) ist schon die Suche des passenden Fernsehers nicht ganz leicht gewesen. Dementsprechend musste man nehmen, was von Breite und Höhe passte.Ebenfalls gab es da natürlich auch spezifische Anforderungen für eine Soundbar. Vor dem Fernseher kann sie nicht liegen, da ist kein Platz mehr. Hinter dem Fernseher wäre möglich gewesen, aber da befürchtete ich einen gewissen Hall.Bleibt also nur eine Soundbar UNTER dem Fernseher. Und die darf auch nicht höher als 6,4 cm sein, da sonst die Glasschranktür oberhalb des Fernsehers nicht mehr aufgehen.Gelandet bin ich dann eher aus Zufall bei der Maxell-Soundbar. Die Maße passten genau wie in der Beschreibung zu lesen. Blieb dann noch die Hoffnung, dass der Ton und die Bedienung auch einigermaßen zufriedenstellend sind.Hier sollte es nämlich auch so einfach wie möglich sein. Mein Vater ist da ein vollkommener Technikversager. Eine zusätzliche Fernbedienung für den Ton könnte ich ihm aber gerade noch so zumuten.Also wurde die Soundbar bestellt.Angekommen habe ich die Soundbar mal ausgepackt und das Handbuch beiseite gelegt. Aha, scheinbar hat die Soundbar Touchfelder zum bedienen. Hatte ich in der Beschreibung nicht gelesen.Als erstes also unter meinen Fernseher geschoben, Stromkabel eingestöpselt und per beiliegendem optischen Kabel angeschlossen.Folgende Anschlüsse gibt es an der Soundbar:1) 3x HDMI in2) HDMI out (für den Anschluss an die HDMI-ARC-Buchse am Fernseher)3) Optischer Eingang (Kabel ist dabei)4) RCA (Kabel ist dabei)5) Line in 3,5 mm Klinke (Kabel ist dabei)6) Strom (Kabel ist dabei)Der Ton hat mich da schon überrascht. Jetzt hat mein Fernseher eigentlich einen sehr annehmbaren Ton, aber die Soundbar brachte da noch eine deutliche Verbesserung. Und erst recht, als ich dann auch noch den Bass ( Boost zweite Stufe) und SRS (hier wird quasi der Stereoton aufgeplustert und pseudo-"surrounded"...im positiven Sinne) dazugeschaltet habe, war ich fast geplättet. Das hat für meine Verhältnisse schon Heimkinoqualität (ja, ich bin KEIN Audiokenner, ich will nur annehmbaren Ton).Nachdem ich dann ein bisschen mit der kleinen aber feinen Fernbedienung (Batterie ist bereits drin) rumgespielt habe, habe ich auch die Anzeigen der Einstell- und Anschlussmöglichkeiten kapiert. Nach einem Blick ins Handbuch, lag ich da auch richtig.Die Einstellungen und Anschlüsse werden durch kleine LEDs angezeigt. Da gibt es dann (je nach Anschluss) bis zu vier Darstellungen:Kein Licht, oranges Licht, weißes Licht, rotes Licht. Im Großen und Ganzen auch in dieser Reihenfolge.Die 6 LEDs an der Vorderseite sind also mehrfach belegt.Von links nach rechts gibt es die LEDs für:1) Power2) RCA/Line in3) Optical/ARC4) HDMI in5) Bass6) SRS1) leuchtet dauerrot wenn die Soundbar ausgeschaltet ist.Wird sie eingeschaltet wechselt die LED auf orange. Nach 10 Sekunden werden wieder alle LEDs ausgeschaltet, es stört also nichts beim Fernsehen.2) leuchtet orange wenn über RCA angeschlossen ist und weiß, wenn Line in anliegt.3) leuchtet orange wenn das optische Kabel das Signal bringt und weiß wenn per ARC (also HDMI-Kabel am ARC-Ausgang des Fernsehers) gesteuert wird.4) leuchtet orange für HDMI 1, weiß für HDMI 2 und rot für HDMI 35) ist dunkel wenn kein Bass eingeschaltet ist, orange für Stufe 1 und weiß für Stufe 26) ist dunkel ohne SRS und orange mit SRSIch habe dann auch probiert meinen Fernseher mittels ARC anzuschließen. Dabei wird dann das Tonsignal vom Fernseher zur Soundbar durchgeschleift. Die Soundbar schaltet sich automatisch ein, wenn der Fernseher eingeschaltet wird und auch die Lautstärke wird dann über den Fernseher geregelt. Heißt also: nur eine Fernbedienung notwendig.Dazu muss man manchmal im TV-Menü ARC erstmal aktivieren und evtl eine Easylink, Simplelink, oder sonstige Link-Verbindung je nach Hersteller aufbauen. Je neuer der Fernseher, desto automatisch.Leider streikte da mein LG etwas. Kurz hatte er die Soundbar als externen Lautsprecher erkannt, aber auch beim nächsten Neustart wieder verloren. Und das ist bis jetzt (einige Tage) so geblieben. Schade. Naja, der LG war damals eher ein Schnäppchen.Da es ja ein Weihnachtsgeschenk sein soll, habe ich die Soundbar heute testweise an den Fernseher meiner Eltern angeschlossen. Bei dem Wurde die Easylink-Verbindung automatisch aufgebaut und die Soundbar als externer Verstärker erkannt.Der Ton und die Handhabung (nur eine Fernbedienung) sind hervorragend.Insgesamt hat diese Soundbar genau das erfüllt, was ich gesucht hatte. Passende Maße, deutlich besserer Ton, einfache Bedienung.Klar, es gibt da bestimmt deutlich bessere Geräte, die dann vielleicht auch mehr können. Aber das brauche ich alles nicht.Und für den Preis von unter 90 Euro kann man eigentlich nichts falsch machen. Ähnliche Soundbars, die man vor den Fernseher hinlegt kosten da schon ein bisschen mehr.Von mir also eine klare Kaufempfehlung.

Por este precio se obtiene buena calidad de construccion, el tv va arriba, tiene conexiones de HDMI para aburrir, asi como tambien optica, que es la que empleo por mi TV que no es muy moderno. El sonido es bueno, podria tener mas potencia, pero mejora considerablemente el de la TV. Buena compra economica.

J' ai cherché pas mal de temps une barre de son correcte mais en lisant les avis, je ne savais plus laquelle choisir!!En désespoir de cause, j' ai opté pour celle-ci, et quelle surprise !!!J' ai tenté de brancher avec le câble HDMI, aucun résultat..J' ai alors connecté avec le câble optique et là.....Le son est sorti puissant, assez pour mon salon, en plus un réglage des basses !!!Rapport qualité/prix: EXCELLENT !!!Installation: Aucun problèmeUtilisation: Très simple
