Review of 'The Marsh harrier'
I think I am echoing the spirit of a previous reviewer by saying that I found this book extremely informative. I understand that Dr Roger Clarke was the foremost authority on harriers and 'The Marsh harrier' is a masterly monograph.Tragically he passed away at a relatively young age but this book passes on his knowledge to current harrier-enthusiasts, especially me. Be advised that it is an extremely detailed book with few pictures or diagrams and very detailed prose. The book demands your attention and in my opinion is like the scientific papers that explorers would have published in the 18th & 19th centuries. The Marsh harrier population in the United Kingdom is now starting to look much healthier than bygone days. This is due to the efforts of conservationists and the understanding of their needs detailed by Dr Clarke. In time the population figures will certainly need updating and the standard of photography will contribute greatly to any new publication. However Dr Clarke made a remarkable contribution to our understanding of this beautiful bird.
