Catechism of the Council of Trent

A great Catechism
I bought this Catechism because Dr.Taylor Marshall recommended it. It has become my favorite Catechism, not only is it very readable, it is a pleasure to read. Not only does it communicate Church teaching, it does do by telling a story, a story where the Church fathers come alive. You will want to read it every day, as many of our good priests have asked us to do.

Outstanding Edition
(Please note: I am not reviewing the content of the Council of Trent, or its catechism. I am reviewing this edition from Tan Books.)The catechism produced by the Council of Trent is something I had long intended to add to my library but kept forgetting. For whatever reason, I decided to grab one last week. I then needed to decide which of several editions I should purchase. I am glad I chose this one.It is a good-looking hardcover from a well-known Catholic publisher (TAN). It appears to be a glued binding but that really doesn't bother me, as I have a few TAN Bibles with glued bindings and the modern adhesive they use seems to remain flexible for many years. This edition comes in a very handy size and I was very surprised by the excellent white paper and crisp, bold print. There is practically no "ghosting" at all. An added bonus is the great introduction, that touches on the history of this catechism and some details of this edition. This edition delivers a lot for the price and is highly recommended.

A must-have for all Catholics.
This is the definitive catechism of the Catholic Church. It does not have a lot of the verbose and flowery language of the new catechism. It is easy to read and understand. It is straight to the point.

Great book! Definitely a must have with the changing times.
Have been told multiple times by mother and grandparents to get this book to learn the proper way to worship god. Needless to say a lot has changed!

Book is actually "Catechism of the Council of Trent for Parish Priests" -- an abridgment from 1923
This book is not the complete Catechism: this is the "Catechism of the Council of Trent for Parish Priests." That is an abridgment with a calendar of sermons. While the writing is clear, it was not what I was wanting when I ordered the book. This version has re-typeset the 1923 test.

The Duty of Every Catholic
It's the duty of every Catholic to pass on the teaching of the Catholic Church through our actions and in our words and that's why The Catechism of the Council of Trent should be on your bookshelf, and, frequently, in your hands. The original 1566 Latin manuscript of the Tridentine Catechism is not extant, but the Manutian edition (also in Latin) that appeared the same year is the basis of this translation by John A. McHugh, O.P. and Charles J. Callan, O.P. Published around 1923 (based on Imprimatur date), this 1982 Tan offering is of excellent quality, very attractively bound, and easy to read.Included is a thirty-page introduction by the translators outlining the history that led to the creation of the Catechism, with interesting background on Catholic catechetics from the early Church up to and including the Protestant rebellion. Also by the translators is a Sermon program outline that joins the moral and dogmatic subjects of the Gospels and Epistles to their treatment in the Catechism for all the Sundays and Feasts of the year. When compared to the newer Catechism of the Catholic Church (1994), this older Catechism of the Council of Trent contains a more basic or 'distilled' teaching. One is not better or preferred over the other; both teach the Truth and both are valuable in and of themselves. The newer Catechism is more in-depth and addresses teaching on a more detailed level. If you are going to read both, I would start with this older Tridentine Catechism, and then read the newer one. Both catechisms are comprised of four main parts:1) The Creed2) The Sacraments3) The Decalogue4) The Lord's PrayerAll the lessons, in greater or lesser detail, are based on these elements. The world has changed enormously since the mid-16th century, but the core doctrine of the Catholic Church has remained constant for two millennia. Some practices have changed, like the laity receiving communion under both species or the fasting and marriage debt abstinence before communion, but those are not matters of doctrine. Personally I'd much rather that the Church remain constant on practices, especially those that changed post-Vatican II.

Happy with the purchase of this item
The book "The Catechism of The Council of Trent" arrived in good shape and before the expected delivery date. The book came shrink wrapped and no damage noted. I took a peak inside the book and the typeset is excellent.Plus it has a table of contents and an index.- something that was missing in other versions of the Catechism that i have inspected. Thank you for the good service.
