Jem and the Holograms [DVD]

Loved it!
Okay, now I agree that this movie was nothing even remotely to the Jem cartoon of the 80's, but I still enjoyed this movie a lot. If you watch from the perspective of it being a stand alone movie with the coincidence of having the same name, it was a fun movie. But if you go into it wanting/expecting it to follow closely to the animated series, you WILL BE disappointed.

Cute movie, but not Jem and the Holograms.
I think this movie got some pretty darn harsh reviews. What it's not:mediocoreJem. This movie in no way shape or form resembles or reflects the original story line of Jem,which is what I was expecting. I watched the cartoon growing up and recently showed it to my daughter, who liked the show as well. Although some of the names are the same, pretty much everything other than the fact that Jem is a rockstar has a completely different storyline. I was not expecting that. However, the singing was beautiful. Peeples is adorable and I liked her acting. The script and plot were mediocre. However, that being said, it was a great movie for mother's and daughter's to watch together. My daughter and I sang along and danced to the songs which came on and my little girl enjoyed it. I also enjoyed it despite being a little disappointed that this was called Jem instead of "cool sweet girl who becomes rockstar". I want to give this 3.5 but rounded up to 4. I'd say it's worth a watch. I'd rent it, and I am glad I only rented it and didn't buy it as I would not likely watch it again

Cute movie with a wonderful message. Decide for yourself.
It's a cute movie that is based on the same principals as the cartoon. So when I see reviews stating that it is horrible because it isn't EXACTLY like the 80's cartoon version, it makes me want to ask these people, "What do you think the film would have been like if it hadn't been reimagined for this day and age?" Maybe I'm expecting too much from these ridiculous, mean spirited complainers, who are probably never like anything except the sound of their own voices. The plot-line had to be tweaked a little bit so that younger viewers could get the feel for what Jem, and the Holograms represent, and so that future films would be able to be introduced. The younger viewers who aren't familiar with the cartoon needed a backstory that would help pull them in, and set the stage for a new generation of Jem fans. Open mindedness, and the ability to understand the message this movie is conveying to the audience, even if it isn't what you wanted it to be, is obviously too much to ask of the people who leave such negative reviews. So decide for yourself. I do.

Jem Movie lacks magic
This review is on the remake of Jem for the real-life movie (not the TV series). The format liberally uses reality-TV style shots, which I found annoying and distracting. While the cartoon TV series was truly outrageous and amazing, the movie merely gives a few nods to the original, making the characters quite different, and even changing them nearly entirely (as in the case of Erica Raymond, who replaced Eric). The music is acceptable, if you ignore the fact that it's supposed to be worthy of Jem (it's not), but there's a deplorable lack thereof. Not enough music. Does this sound like Jem? No!The movie's premise is that Jerrica Benton posts a video on YouTube that goes viral immediately. Her father has been dead for 10 years and she lives with her aunt. They are going to lose their house, so Jerrica, Kimber, Aja, and Shana try to help their aunt, and, while pursuing music offers, end up becoming victims of Erica Raymond, whose son, Rio, falls for Jerrica. There is no holographic magic, just a scavenger hunt directed by a "Synergy" robot, sort of cute, but hardly magical. The Jem earrings do not even project holograms, but end up (spoiler alert) being a component of the robot, triggering video saved by Jerrica's father. Not at all impressive. There is one notable improvement on the cartoon: Jerrica does not deceive Rio about who she is. That premise was carried too far in the cartoon. However, the cartoon also depicted Rio as knowing Jerrica since they were kids. And Rio came to the rescue frequently. In the cartoon, there was never a doubt that Rio cared about Jerrica and that they had a real relationship. But, in the movie, apparently, Jerrica begins to lust after Rio after seeing him pull on his pants and zip them up. This (ah-hem) reflects badly on any attempt for romance, and it drags their relationship into the modern lust-after them and leave-them format. There were no Misfits, which meant that the only foil for Jem and crew was Erica, whose reign was easily toppled (in one instant) by her son Rio. The storyline is threadbare, at best. There is not enough glamour and glitter, fashion and fame to make up for this lack. The Jem enchantment just isn't there.

I loved it.
Please no comments. I bought the original series just before watching the movie. I really love the cartoon. It is 10 times better than i remembered when i was a kid. I held off watching the movie based on others reviews. I should have known if others didn't like it i probably would. You either love the changes made or hate them i guess. I am one who likes the changes made on the new movies based on my old favorite characters. I like the Tmnt, G.i. joe, and new Transformers movies. To me, and only my opinion, i love the changes made. If you're like me and can accept fresh changes, you might fall in love with this movie too. I really hope this movie finds its audience so i can get a sequel. I couldn't help myself and bought the soundtrack too. Again, please no comments, thank you. Jem lives.

Tween musical
This is a sweet tween musical fantasy of youtube propelling 3 sisters into a cliche of hollywood stardom. It is done well and for all the slightly exaggerated, formulaic and 'fancy-extra' elements, is sympathetic, engaging, fun and entertaining. There are elements of family fellowship, a supportive validating humanist message, treasure hunt, old family history, saving an inheritance, good versus evil values, the male crush, a great song (or two) some nice dialogue, and overall a nice story, that doesn't need half the jazz and complexity some producer's focus group has tried to cram into it. Fair is fair, it was much of it from a comic strip origin, and they have been faithful in their homage. I give credit to the screen writer who makes it work despite the curlicues, over-done evil step mum and robot-hologram. The actors carry their weight and have good material to work with. The leads do particularly well. It is easy to be enchanted however fluffy this is, the key elements are all there and done right.RECOMMENDED

Definitely one for the 80's Jem and the Holograms fans!
This arrived as a generous DVD boxset that I am thoroughly overjoyed with! 10 discs that gave immense happiness and allowed me to relive a great part of my 80's childhood with a cartoon favourite. The series is not digitally remastered but watching it is just like viewing a live 80's broadcast - completely watchable and sure not to disappoint. If you love Jem and the Holograms, not to mention a sing along, then I recommend this item 110%.

Fantastic update to the 80's cartoon
The DVD is Region 1 so you will need an multi regional DVD player, but the Blu Ray is Region Free so will play on any Blu Ray Player. However you can't use the Digital Code in the UK it is only for the US and Canada! Which is a bummer really. The film is great and takes me back to the cartoon of 30 years ago...so you now know how old I am...obviously it has been updated but it does pay homage to the cartoon very well.I would recommend this to children and to anyone who remembers the cartoon.
