Q: Can anyone verify whether the toxic smoke/fumes from lead solder is actually absorbed within the filter? Are these truly effective for that?

The filters are made with activated carbon coated mesh which does actually remove fumes from the air. The acids and toxins in the fumes bond to the surface of the carbon. The mesh captures the particulate. The filters are not 100% effective, but they remove most of the toxins. The filters also have a lifespan. Eventually, as the chemicals in the fumes bond to the surface, the effectiveness of the filter diminishes to a point where it needs to be replaced. There's a lot of literature on the web; look up 'Activated Carbon'.

Q: Can this work with paint?

It didn't work with cigarette smoke.

Q: I have been using another filter/fan for soldering and I'm wondering how this one compares; How close does the smoke have to be to get pulled in?

I put the filter at an angle downward, slightly elevated fro the work area and within 8 inches. This combination eliminates any allergic type reactions in my eyes and nose. The smoke from the soldering is clearly drawn into the filter.

Q: Can anyone tell me if this would help draw smoke away from woodburning projects?

Yes, it is just a suction fan that pulls the air through a filter to trap the smoke. It doesn't care what kind of smoke it traps.
