Carmen Sandiego Math Detective helps children, ages 8-14, discover the ease in math and problem solving. Missions challenge math success through mastering essential skills, geometry, and word problems. While trying to uncover V.I.L.E hideouts, they will be practicing multiplication, division, and fractions. Just when you're about to say, "Enough Carmen Sandiego already," out comes yet another exceptional detective caper. This one tracks the globe-trotting thief into the numbers racket! Well, sorta. Instead of the geography, space, time and word worlds that Carmen previously pilfered, this menacing mystery comprehensively covers the basic mathematics, word-problem solving and geometry that's probed in the fourth, fifth and sixth grades. The 12 missions to save the world's greatest landmarks from Carmen's shrinking Quantum Crystallizer use made-up technology that'll have players doing complex computations forward and backward (really!), constructing geometric models and practicing mental math procedures, among other math skills. A big bonus is the Strategy Guide which helps with easy-to-understand problem-solving hints and tips that are both practical and conceptual. Best of all, this superb software help math-harassed grade-schoolers to recognize mathematics as a game. (Don Oldenburg, Parents' Choiceยฎ) Another rock solid Carmen title! This one is filled with five high tech math gadgets that let a child find the clues needed to nab criminals... one math problem at a time. The program contains plenty of content- 400 word problems, three levels, customized problem sets- plus an onscreen progress report and a glossary of math terms. Kids get lots of practice with multiplication, division, fractions, percents, pre-algebra and geometry. Best of all, there's enough suspense and danger built-in to keep the kids on the edges of their seats. Testers wanted to play this program all the way to the end. The CD would work well in either the home or classroom. Teaches: pre-algebra, geometry, division, fractions, percents Age Range: 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14 Copyright ยฉ 2000 Children's Software Revue -- From Children's Software Revueยฎ -- "Subscribe Now!" Review: very dissapointed - Wow! Who sells outdated software? Seriously? My old XP computer that we have had for 12 years won't even run this program. What a waste of money and time! I wish I had looked at the reviews before I put this item in my cart. Review: Very fun, but definitely for slightly older grade schoolers - Very fun, but definitely for slightly older grade schoolers, as it can get a little scary from time to time - the villains always ALMOST catch you once you recover the loot from their hideout. 12 missions doesn't sound like much, but they get harder as time goes on. Gameplay can get a little repetitive, but good design overall. Very much worth a play!

Just as great as Word Detective!
Runs wonderfully inside of a Windows 98 virtual machine. I'm grateful I had the opportunity to acquire this sequel to my favorite Carmen Sandiego title, i.e. Word Detective. Until recently, I wasn't even aware it had a sequel. I implore all who claim this is outdated and useless software to research virtualization software. Don't let your modern systems keep you from enjoying older programs. Virtual Machine side note: In order for the game to fill up all of your screen instead of just a small portion of it, first change the resolution on your host computer (NOT your virtual machine) to 640x480( it should be under the resolution page's advanced settings -> adapter tab -> list all modes). Then on your virtual machine toolbar, click to enter full screen mode*. Now when you start up the game in the virtual machine, it should fill up all of your screen. *I don't know if any virtualization software other than VMware allows you to enter full screen mode; so if you don't have that option on yours, I apologize and hint at changing your software to one with such a capability.

Windows Requirements
My kids never played the game. This CD-Rom requires Windows 95/98. We don't have ANYthing that runs such an outdated version of Windows. Know the requirements BEFORE you buy this!

A Well-Based, Equally Fun Adventure
Carmen Sandiego: Math Detective is an extremely entertaining, fun, and yet, a very educational game. Don't get me wrong, the game is not without difficulties; some of the math work you have to solve while doing so in a limited amount of time can make your head hurt just a wee-little-bit. However, Carmen Sandiego: Math Detective gives players that super-spy feel when you travel to dark, villainous hideouts and solve math puzzles to crack the case. The plot: Carmen has stolen some of the world's most precious monuments, such as the Coloseum in Rome, Italy, Angel Falls in Venezuela, and the Petronas Towers in Kuala Lampur, Malaysia, by using her new giant machine, the Quantum Crystalizer, and then shrinking these monuments and putting them into miniature crystals, causing people to mourn the loss of these precious monuments all over the world. Your job: travel to these VILE hideouts, which include Brazil and outer space, and decode math puzzles that add up to a monument. Do some more math puzzles, restore another monument. The more puzzles you solve, the more monuments you restore. However, if you have played some of the other Carmen games such as Carmen Word Detective, you will recall the case that Carmen and Chase never finished, the case of the Promotheous Rock. (Hope I spelled that right, LOL!) Apparently, Carmen has built a spanking-dash new headquarters for her villainous crime agency, VILE. Chase is puzzled: what kind of powers does the Quantum Crystallizer possess to suck up these giant monuments? One thing to note: the Promotheous Rock was a mythical rock that was rumored to have special, strong powers and was never found because Carmen quit in the middle of the case and left to start her criminal agency, VILE. But what DOES the Promotheous Rock have to do with all this, and what will happen when you reach the end and restore all the monuments? You'll just have to wait and see! I know: it sounds complicated. But it's way more fun than complicated; purchase this game and see for yourself! It's great for any young kid, preteen, or even teens! Enjoy!
