Dana (Kate Beckinsale), her husband David and their 5-year-old son Lucas start a new life after moving from the hustle and bustle of Brooklyn, N.Y., to a stately old manor in the quiet countryside. After settling in, Dana starts to experience terrifying visions and dreams that she cannot explain. The mystery grows when she stumbles upon a secret room in the attic. After finding the key and unlocking the door, Dana discovers the dark history of the family that lived there in the 19th century.

Ugggg... Why...
This movie has a lot of nice things going for it, but I'm going 2 stars...Camera work / lighting / audio - all fine as expectedActing - SolidSFX - limited, but okPlot - Absolute train wreckThis movie steals the premise of 1000 other haunted house movies and jumbles it into a mess that is virtually unintelligible... Besides our happy family of 3 moving into said haunted house, there are at least 3 other characters that could have done "something" to improve the plot... and... they don't... They are literally just fluff with no reason for being in the movie at all...They even make reference to a FAR FAR superior haunted house movie that was filmed back in 1982... ( Seriously... just shut this movie off, and go turn that one on instead... )The movie has virtually no actual scares... ( I mean, I guess some scenes could scare some people, but I got nothing... ) ... The movie is quasi?-suspenseful, maybe? I made it through to the end, but it was mainly in the hopes that it would have some cool revelation-like climax or something... which it doesn't...Really lame build up... lame climax... and like no plot resolution... This was some of the worst writing I've seen in a long long time... ( even compared to like C-rate movies done by what I think are college film majors... )This is seriously just an awful awful movie... I can't recommend it to anyone... even horror buffs who are mega-bored on a rainy day... 2 stars from me since I made it through to the end, and I have actually seen worse... but it's bad...Feel free to read my other reviews ( I review a LOT of movies ). My ranking style1 - This movie should never have been made. I probably couldn't even finish it...2 - This is a bad movie... Can't recommend. Probably regret watching it...3 - Average movie... Possibly a soft recommend. Will probably not watch again.4 - Solid movie. Lots of good things going on. Will probably watch again.5 - I need to call all my friends right now...

"Disappointments..." YESSSSSSSSSSS
Goodness where do you begin with such a poor movie? Kate Beckinsale is a hottie NOT AN ARCHITECT. Her terminology was incorrect. Talking about "Getting money back from a contractor...". It is LIQUIDATED DAMAGES Katy bear! She is not the mother type. Note the absolute disconnect with her child throughout the movie. She is like Lena Olin attempting to be a caring mother. Her Husband was a sickly moron who level jumped about 8 times to have her. That was so unbelievable you nearly turned it off seeing them cuddle. Like the Hunchback and Esmeralda being lovers. At least they could have had the young contractor stud and the star in an illicit love scene ( which is her only good trait.) Sorry, no deal. She even circles portions of a flawless ( never in archives) blue line before digitizing it. Enough, Enough....Anyway, this was a sleeper and should remain in eternal slumber. Bury it like the dead in the back yard of the newer mansion ( supposed to be old, but never shown in it's entirety which was necessary to paint the aura of the movie...)C'mon Kate show your good side. We know which side that is.

Beautiful to look at but very underwritten haunted house movie
I really wished I had paid more attention to the reviews before watching this film. Overall the ratings gave it an average decent score, it has Kate Beckinsale, one of my favorites, I loved creepy haunted house movies, it was filmed in a location where other horror films had been shot, how bad could it be?Pretty bad. The casting was more than fine, good even, I loved the creepy house, production values were good, it looked slick and well made. Music fine, effects (when we saw them) were fine. Nice tension and pacing. It doesn’t look or feel awful. But it is awful. Or at least, ultimately, very underwhelming, though at various points in the film it looks like it could have easily been salvaged but it wasn’t. I don’t know if it was bad writing or bad editing (it’s not bad acting), but it felt choppy, uneven, and was quite confusing. I get that it was a psychological horror film, where the central character (and thus the viewer) is unaware of the exact nature of reality, but even given that, it was often confusing what reality was. Not overall what was happening (a poor woman being haunted and driven mad) but the exact elements were unclear. It looked like sometimes people died from her hauntings/episodes, then it was shown perhaps nothing Kate’s character experienced was real, but that still left questions (did she destroy an object or didn’t she; if a character isn’t dead, ok, where is that character?).The central premise seemed promising enough. A loving family, an architect (Dana Barrow, Kate’s character), her house spouse David (Mel Raido), and their son Lucas (Duncan Joiner) move from Brooklyn to a beautiful creepy haunted fixer upper in very rural mountainous North Carolina, a huge leaky, shadowy house with lots of character, a dark past (they don’t know about at first but come on), long corridors with no natural light, endless stairwells, a simply enormous attic, creepy overgrown grounds with a cemetery near tangled woods, Dana there to apparently recover from a family trauma…the film looked like it had all the elements needed for a great haunted house film, the family moving in and unpacking alone in rooms as water drips in the background, Lucas playing off by himself in remote corners of the house and maybe talking to Apparently No One, the disbelieving husband when the wife Knows She Saw Something….a bit tropish but I like those tropes.Only the movie felt full of holes. Too many elements of what Dana experiences (and only ever Dana) were confusing. Some obviously didn’t happen, but some…maybe they did? It was confusing. There were plot elements introduced that felt unfinished or edited down to islands of confusion. We meet and talk to a chatty, friendly woman in the nearby town, I guess she served as a vehicle to introduce another character, but we never ever see her again. This other character she introduces, it felt like a lot of build up for him, maybe something Bad happened to him, maybe Not, but his plot thread (sorry if this is spoilers) felt very very underdone. There is a plot thread of a friendly local librarian and researcher in town, she calls Dana with what looks like a Dire Warning…but then shrugs when Dana doesn’t pick up the phone and apparently that’s that. We see a dinner party at one point, one of the characters is played by Michaela Conlin (I instantly recognized her from _Bones_) but blink and you miss her and she as far as I could tell had no audible lines in the movie. What?I really wanted to like the movie. As I said, I liked the casting, the acting was fine, the production values were fine, it was a cool old house, I even liked the premise of the source of the haunting, but the movie felt underdone, underwritten, needlessly confusing right to the end (did they leave, is the haunting finished, I still don’t know if a secondary character is dead or not).

Underworldstar Kate beckinsale mal anders

I felt it would be good and it was
Didn't know what to expect but since Kate Beckinsale was the lead actress, I felt it would be good and it was. Good story, well acted and the movie was in excellent condition.
