This olive extract is different from most other olive extracts. It is from the fruit instead of the leaf. Instead of being standardized for Oleuropein, it is standardized for Hydroxytyrosol and related polyphenols. Hydroxytyrosol is more potent and more expensive than Oleuropein. Oleuropein and Hydroxytyrosol are both polyphenols, and they are chemically very similar. They are generally used for the same benefits.

Hydroxytyrosol has several advantages. 1) It is much more potent than Oleuropein and can be taken in a much smaller amount. 2) It can work better for people with digestive issues, since much of the benefit of Oleuropein comes from its partial conversion to Hydroxytyrosol in the gut. 3) Hydroxytyrosol does not have a bitter taste, so it is preferred for people who twist open the capsule and take the powder as a drink or mixed in food. 4) There are far more scientific studies on Hydroxytyrosol, and it is the more popular extract in much of the world.

For most people, our other olive product (“Real European Olive LEAF Extract”) is the world’s best olive leaf extract. It contains extracts standardized for 25% Oleuropein and 16% pure Hydroxytyrosol, along with a broad mix of other olive polyphenols and related phytonutrients. All of our olive extracts are grown on family farms in Andalusia, Spain, which is the world’s premier region for vigorous, healthy olive trees. The extracts are made fresh by olive experts in a facility near the farms, using traditional, chemical-free extraction. Then we bottle the final product in the US. We use only the real Mediterranean olive tree (OLEA EUROPAEA), which is the type used to make olive oil.

Almost all other brands use extracts from China where true Mediterranean olive trees are not native and do not thrive. Often the Chinese powders are made from the wrong tree altogether (CANARIUM ALBUM), which does not contain true olive polyphenols. Other brands rely on Chinese wholesalers and middlemen who often do not know the difference between the trees. Most other brands do not know the original source of their powders. Many brands selling 750mg are selling the same Chinese product from the same factory, but they will sometimes misidentify the country of origin.

It is just as important to select a quality olive leaf extract as it is to select a quality olive oil. Few people would trust a Chinese olive oil, and that should be true for the olive extracts too.

This Hydroxytyrosol product and our “Real European Olive Leaf Extract” have many similarities. Both are full-spectrum olive extract products standardized for polyphenols. Both are from the correct type of olive-oil-producing trees, 100% grown and extracted in Spain on family-owned farms. Both are produced without pesticide, herbicide, fertilizer, irrigation or chemical solvents. Both contain only standardized olive extracts, a vegan plant-based capsule and trace amounts of an inert hypoallergenic rice flour used in production to keep the capsules from sticking to the encapsulation machinery. There are no whole herb powders, fillers or hidden ingredients. Both products are completely vegan and Non-GMO.

Our Real European Olive Leaf Extract product is a blend of two extracts and is our best-seller. Each capsule includes 500mg of olive LEAF extract standardized to contain at least 25% Oleuropein. It also contains 25mg of olive FRUIT extract standardized to contain at least 16% pure Hydroxytyrosol and at least 20% Hydroxytyrosol Complex, which includes Hydroxytyrosol and related polyphenols such as Tyrosol. Both the leaf extract and the fruit extract are minimally processed using traditional holistic extraction methods to preserve a broad spectrum of olive polyphenols and related phytonutrients that work together synergistically.

Our “Hydroxytyrosol” product contains 100mg of the same olive fruit extract used in our Real European Olive Leaf Extract product.

Hydroxytyrosol is an olive polyphenol that is chemically very similar to Oleuropein. (Oleuropein is Hydroxytyrosol bound to Elenoic Acid and Glucose.) Hydroxytyrosol can be produced by chemically converting Oleuropein from olive leaves; however, we do *not* do this. Our Hydroxytyrosol is a natural fruit extract that is not chemically converted.

Hydroxytyrosol has roughly the same health benefits as Oleuropein, but is more potent, so a smaller amount can be used. This makes Hydroxytyrosol a good choice for someone who wants a very small capsule.

The fruit extract has a milder taste than the leaf extract, since Oleuropein is the plant constituent that adds bitter flavor to olive oil. This makes our Hydroxytyrosol fruit extract a good choice for someone who wants to take the powder mixed in food or drink instead of using the capsule.

The benefits of olive leaf extract are believed to be in part due to the partial conversion of Oleuropein to Hydroxytyrosol in the gut; therefore, the Hydroxytyrosol product may be a better choice for someone with digestive issues that interfere with this conversion.

Oleuropein is more famous in the US, but there are more medical studies on Hydroxytyrosol than on Oleuropein. Some people may prefer the Hydroxytyrosol extract if they are following a particular medical study that was based on Hydroxytyrosol.

Hydroxytyrosol has exceptionally high antioxidant activity, and it is particularly healthy for skin, so some people prefer it for this benefit.

Although the Hydroxytyrosol product has advantages for some people, we recommend our Real European Olive Leaf Extract product as the best choice for most people, since it is a very robust mix of polyphenols that also includes a substantial amount of the fruit extract.

What guarantee do you offer that this is from European, Spanish olive trees, harvested and processed in Spain?

All of our olive extracts come from our co-op of family farms in Andalusia, Spain, as a by-product of olive oil production. They are all extracted at the same facility near the farms. We have sight to the entire production process. The extracts are produced fresh-to-order, only when we need them, and are made just for us. If anyone else is selling the same extracts, they bought them from us. We use only our own premium standardized olive extracts, and we never use whole herb powder or any other fillers or any olive products from other sources.

We are not a “private label” brand, and we do not source our extracts from middlemen suppliers. Almost all other olive leaf extracts are from China and are sourced through layers of middlemen. Most brands do not know where their extracts are grown or processed and will usually declare only the country where the extracts are encapsulated. Many brands sell the same extracts from the same private-label factories, and they do not even know if the correct tree species was used, since Chinese sources will sometimes us the “Chinese olive tree.”

Is this product from fruits or leaves?  How are they different ?  Do they have same benefits?

Our Hydroxytyrosol is 100% from olive fruit. Hydroxytyrosol from fruit or leaf should be the same and should have the same benefits; however, the production methods are different and can result in different byproducts, cofactors and residue.

It is simpler and more natural to derive Hydroxytyrosol from fruit. Hydroxytyrosol from leaf is chemically converted from Oleuropein, which is the most common polyphenol in olive leaves.  In general, leaf is for Oleuropein, and fruit is for Hydroxytyrosol.

We use only traditional herbal extraction methods for all of our olive extracts, and we never use chemical solvents. Our methods retain a wide blend of natural olive polyphenols and other olive phytonutrients that work synergistically with the “key” polyphenols.

Our Hydroxytyrosol is standardized to contain at least 20% Hydroxytyrosol Complex and at least 16% pure Hydroxytyrosol. “Hydroxytyrosol Complex” is a mix of Hydroxytyrosol and related polyphenols and phytonutrients that co-exist naturally in the olive fruit, such as Tyrosol, Oleacein, Oleocanthal, and Verbascoside
