Mahabharat
The sound quality of the music on these CDs is very poor, but improves during regular spoken dialogue. I made the mistake of making some written notes on the summary booklet before watching the DVD's, or I would have returned them, for replacement copy. So I am not sure if this problem applies to all copies of the film. This is an otherwise well done film of one of the two great Indian epics. The English subtitles are reasonably well done. The acting was adequate, although occasionally a little stilted. It includes an abridged summary of the Bhagavad Gita, skipping over some of the more difficult metaphysics. I thought it was a little strange to present Krishna armed to the teath while teaching Arjuna, when he had agreed only to be the driver of Arjuna's chariot, and to not take (physical) part in the battle. All in all, this is an important contribution to the Mahabharat epic by making it accessible in detail through film, with 94 episodes. Unfortunately, according to the summary, the story is not complete. The final temtation and enlightenment of Yudhishtira, and all the scenes leeding up to this are missing. The story ends with Bhishma (Bheeshma) giving a "discourse on Dharma and his soul leaves for the heavens." I just hope the sound problem isn't endemic in all the published DVDs.

Epic presented well
Mahabharat was undoubtfully the best TV serial ever shown on Indian television. So much so that the streets were deserted when it was telecasted and people scheduled their day to be sure to catch the show.I was a teenager during 80s when this was on television, and I was not a big TV person. I still remember the strong will to catch this serial. Chopras, normally producing movies, have done a great job of creating this. If you know the epic, you do feel that's exactly how it must have happened. You do picture Lord Krishna in Nitish Bharadwaj and Puneet Issar as Duryodhana. It has such a grip that I would want to see it over and over again. If you have not seen it, I would strongly recommand watching it at least once. - Enjoy!

epicly epic
I caught this series from about the midpoint on the International Channel about 15 years ago. I watched it through to the end hoping they would restart it from the beginning, but they didn't. I tried buying it on video but it was prohibitively expensive. Yet now that it's on DVD, all in a set, finally I could buy and watch from the beginning. It is epic. Epicly epic. Yes, it has some production issues; it has Tom Baker-era "Doctor Who" special effects scenes that are not entirely special, but it does not matter. In this setting, with this big of a story, it still works. It's so involved, so complicated, yet you do not get lost. You can follow the subplots without needing the guide, which is a feat considering the literal "cast of hundreds" in it.I also was not happy with the subtitle issues. I thought it was my DVD player, which does tend to drop stuff occasionally. I see others had the same issue. There are also other points where the subtitles are mismatched, and at times you can tell someone else was in charge of the subtitle machine because spellings become wildly varied at points.Still doesn't matter. This is an epic. It is allowed to be... in fact, required to be... hugely over the top. Big stories require big storytelling. This delivers on both counts.

Great Epic
The production the acting and directing was great. The subtitles sometimes were placed on the wrong scene; or the actor would talk in hindi for several sentences and all the subtitles would show are three words or a short sentence. I know we have missed a lot because of language BUT still a great epic. They took 11 dvd's to build the story then finally in the 12 disk they spoke BRIEFLY of the 18 chapters of the bhagvad gita....READ THE BOOK...'The Holy Geeta' by swami Chinmayananda a great commentary or another a real shorty 'The Bhagavad Gita' by penguin books translated by Juan Mascaro. This Mahabharat was a great epic worth keeping in your collection along with the story of Jesus Christ and the Buddha.
