Really handy
This is a box of jute plugs for starting fires from sparks. The box measures 3.5”x2.5”x0.5” and is made of metal with a hinge on one side. Inside the box are forty 1” long pieces of paraffin soaked twisted jute sections. This bits of jute are ready for fire starting—just add a spark from a flint or an electric spark generator, and they will catch and hold the spark. Add some tinder and you’re good to go.I am quite pleased with how easy it is to get a fire going with these plugs. With even a small spark, you can get the jute burning, and it will burn for quite a while, long enough to get some bigger tinder going. Rather than use an entire piece of jute to start my fires, I untwist the plugs, getting 4 pieces out of a single plug, and even then, I could probably get away with even a smaller piece. I generally transfer the jute to some birch bark before adding twigs to my fire. After using up all the jute, the box remains as a great container for making and storing char cloth. Overall, this is a really handy addition to my camp fire tool kit.

Spend some time practicing and these will work every time.
One of the small joys I get out of life is getting my family around the fire-pit. At first i would use a traditional fire log. But over the last few years i started wanting to learn other ways to get a fire going in case of emergency. If Hurricanes Sandy, Maria, or the Pandemic have taught me anything, it's that one can never be too prepared. In most cases i've been able to get a solid fire going with one or two tabs. Just pull the fibers apart and build a little birds nest. Hit it with your ferrocerium rod, matches, or a lighter and these tabs will ignite. They burn hot and last about a minute or two. As long as you have plenty of kindling you'll be roasting marshmallows and swapping stories in no time.I keep a tin of these in my get home bag, and plan on getting some for all of our emergency bags and first aid kits since the tin is bout the size of an Altoids box.

Great design…best lit without Ferro rod
The media could not be loaded. I have all kinds of methods to start a fire because I, honestly, suck at it. My wife saw me trying to work the ferro rod and bought me a rechargeable arc lighter. I have improved in the last few months with dry tender, but how I start it still varies. For camp, I have a container of wine corks soaked in vodka. For backcountry, I use the excuse I don’t have time. This product caught my attention because it takes up virtually no space and weighs next to nothing. Also, you have 160 “starts” (40 tabs and each tab has four strands). According to the video, you only need one strand and you should only need one strike of the ferro rod. I’m not the most skilled at the rod, but you can see in the video it sparked several times before igniting. Since I am not the best woodsman, I will go 50/50 and say an experienced rod user (or someone with a bigger rod) can probably get this lit on the first strike. (Side note: Matches or an arc lighter work great!)I will also say the single strand burned well for about a minute, adequate time and intensity to light tender. I didn’t try the waterproof claim or lighting it while on ice, but I’ll trust them here. I’d recommend this product.

not that great
The media could not be loaded. Would not accept spark from ferro rod despite mutlitple attempts even when broken down into small pieces (see photo of it pulled apart in ash tray). It did take light from the lighter and burned for about 90 seconds. I did not attempt wet conditions as this was done in dry, low humidity weather. This will not work under a life saving situation. Would not recommend to take camping where you can get into your car and drive to the gas station to get a lighter.

You're doing it wrong
First of all, these work really well with a ferro rod, mag glass, or of course, a lighter. What other reviewers may not be aware of is that you don't try to light the piece of rope as it is in the tin. You pull it apart into dozens and dozens of smaller fibers. Make a little pile of them with other tinder and strike a ferro rod to get it going. Have a ton of pencil lead sized twigs nearby, and as the flames grow, add larger and larger fuel. So, when you use these rope fibers correctly, they are very good, lightweight tinder. My only problem is that they are ridiculously expensive. (23$!) You could buy some decent twine/rope and make these yourself for next to nothing. The tin costs a couple bucks tops. So I could never recommend this as an option to anyone because it is highway robbery. Having said that, please use it correctly if you do pay that much for it. Not recommended.

Very functional
The media could not be loaded. I got these little fire tabs to put in my bug out bag and in my backpack for hikingThey pull apart really easily so that you can use the individual fibers to build a nice little pile to light on fire underneath any Tinder. These little tabs are long burning and ignite easily.Fantastic and easy add to make sure you can light a fire in any emergency situation. I highly recommend that you add these to your bug out bag or your hiking bag to make sure that you can provide yourself some heat no matter the situation. They definitely light in inclement weather, so you don’t have to worry about rain, wind, or snow you will still get your fire lit with ease

Excellent fire starters.
I do quite a bit of backpacking and canoe camping.Whenever it's allowed, I love to have a campfire.I also live in the beautiful Pacific Northwest. We are known for our less-than-dry climate.Sometimes getting a fire started can be a little difficult under those conditions.I'm pretty good at fire craft, but even I need a little help sometimes. These fire starters are excellent. They are very small in size, but produce a flame that lasts for several minutes. They're easy to ignite with a ferro rod, just tuft them up until there's a little bit of fluff exposed then hit them with a spark. They're even easier to light with a standard lighter.I think that good fire starters are a dime a dozen.. what sets these apart is the fact that they are super lightweight and compact. An excellent value for the money.Highly recommended.
