Agatha Christie's Partners in Crime [DVD] [2015] [2017]

I liked it!
I liked this 1950's Tommy and Tuppence despite it not being true to the books. The setting worked very well: costumes, sets, style of speaking etc were excellent. For me David Walliams played Tommy very well indeed but Jessica Raine as Tuppence was tricky. It wasn't until "N or M" that I felt she was getting into the role, in "Secret Adversary" her accent was often straight out of "Call the Midwife" and so didn't fit in at all. In fact the whole of "Secret Adversary" came over as a kind of trial run for three of the main characters as they were all much better in "N or M". David Walliams managed to keep Tommy in character once "Secret Adversary" moved into the second episode. I did not like the few scenes of needless violence in both stories, totally unnecessary and not in keeping with Agatha Christie's writing and certainly not suitable for 12-year olds to watch, well not in my view anyhow.I'm sorry that the BBC have decided not to commission a second series. Most memorable and good series really take off in series 2 and 3 and this is no exception. Partners could have gone from strength to strength! All the groundstones were in place and they had a solid foundation to work from. Hopefully someone else (ITV maybe) will pick this up?It is very different from the James Warwick, Francesca Annis productions which are brilliant if you enjoy the 1920's/30's but there also lies the charm of a new look. Tommy and Tuppence should be revived and in 1950's Britain they fitted in well. The extras are very interesting covering all aspects of the production.

Thoroughly enjoyable adaption.
Does not strictly follow the books in terms of storyline, but I found the adaption thoroughly enjoyable and I really wish that they would make more with the same actors. Excellent viewing, and even more so because the stories have not been adulterated to include gratuitous sex and violence.

Another Agatha Christie Ruined By BBC
Another Agatha Christie ruined by the bloody BBC!The general outline of the story is still there, and the adaptation from book to TV screen is also pretty decent, but main actor, David Walliams, is awful!Trying his best to ruin it, with his deliberate carrying-on stupidity, turning Christie's ex-military character into a gay clown!Terrible version, simply because of actor Walliams!

Agatha Christie reinvented.
Sometimes the pace is a little slow and there are elements of overacting but generally this is an entertaining foray into the world of Tommy and Tuppence. The period has been successfully relocated to the 1950s and the production values are quite high. Jessica Raine outshines David Walliams but James Fleet brings the whole thing together. A good buy at a very low price.

Winning combination
Now unlike the overwhelming majority of Agatha Christie fans, I really enjoyed this updated version of the Tommy and Tuppence novels. If you can get over that David Walliams plays himself, the winning combination in this version is the high production values, gorgeous sets and visuals. Unfortunately there doesn't seem to be another series in the offing so sit back and enjoy this one.

A misjudgment.
Solid production values, excellent (if updated) period detail, and a strong cast cannot overcome the problems of a silly and unbelievable script that fails to be either amusing or remotely convincing. The series writer (Zinnie Harris of Part one) and producers (Georgina Lowe & Hilary Bevan Jones) are to blame, not poor Mrs Christie on whose work “Partners in Crime” is based. A normally successful director (Ed Hall) does his best to deal with the irritating and childish list of silly actions given to the leading characters that are meant to be endearing, but incrementally become unbearable. Their reckless behaviour becomes increasingly stupid until you lose interest in the storyline. I have watched the first two parts (the stories “M or N” and “The Secret Adversary” are dramatised over six 50 minute episode) and really can’t be bothered to see any more. Another botched Agatha Christie adaptation it seems - such a shame! Matthew Pritchard who has been entrusted with the Christie Estate needs to take his responsibilities a little more seriously particularly after the other Agatha Christie adaptations recently on the BBC which were ghastly exploitative versions of the author’s classic works. “Partners in Crime” was definitely not as bad as those - thankfully! Oh for the days of the “original” Poirots and Miss Marples!

Partners in Crime
Presently watching movie. Unfortunately it is not a patch on other Agatha Christie star casting movies that I have. The characters are a bit lame (this means dumb). I will watch both the movies on this DVD but I find the viewing a bit agonising. I have another set of DVDs of Partners in Crime, like that much better. Additional review later in the day - I have finished watching the first movie and I must be fair - it actually got a bit better half way through until the end - nowhere near as painful as it was when it started. Maybe the characters had to get their sealegs. Two days later and I have watched the second movie N or M, it was not bad. If you like Agatha Christie take a punt (give it a go). The first movie as I said started off slow but there was a definite improvement later in that move and in the second movie.
