I am not a fan of outdoor LED lights
I like LED lights but I do feel that they are overrated for use outdoors as whilst the light is bright at the source and they use very little power, the coverage and light on the ground is nowhere near as good as a proper bulb.I purchased this item to supplement a PIR activated tungsten bulb which lights up the 4 steps leading down to our house. Unfortunately due to the location of the tungsten lamp the PIR does not activate quickly enough for the brisk and unaware visitor to our house and whilst we have not had anyone have an accident, my wife was sufficiently concerned for me to seek an additional lamp. I spotted this item on Amazon and decided that at the price it would probably be ideal, particularly as I did not wish to run additional cabling and as it is on a north facing wall there would be insufficient light for a solar panel powered light.Out of the box, I inserted 3 D cell batteries, which adds considerably to the cost as they are not supplied and as Duracell only market their product in pairs or greater numbers I have one left over. I located the item under the eaves to keep it out of the weather, but because the sensor has to be above the lamp I had to locate it lower than I would have liked. The lamp can be altered in terms of pitch and can be rotated on its axis, however, the range of movement is not that good. I fixed mine to the wall using the screws and raw plugs supplied and waited for the dark.In use, it is sensitive and I have to admit that it does exactly what I want it to. It is sufficiently sensitive to illuminate the steps a couple of paces ahead of when our tungsten light is activated and therefore I have negated the risk to the unaware. So why 3 stars and not 5 like some other reviewers? Firstly the light was incredibly bright when you look at it is nowhere near as effective in use and I would describe it as similar to bright moonlight; if this item illuminates 400 square feet, I must need to visit my optician! Secondly it required me to purchase 4 batteries and finally the range of movement is not that great and whilst it is easy to adjust it does not necessarily adjust to the exact place you want it to shine. When you combine that with the cost of the item and batteries, I feel that a good rating, rather than very good or excellent, is appropriate. It may have satisfied the need that I have for a battery powered supplementary light perfectly, but as a reviewer of the product, I think that I am being fair based upon total price, quality of the item and level of illumination.

No fuss lighting, perfect for dark corners and paths
Make no mistake, these are not suitable as security lighting or for floodlighting the garden. While they are bright enough that you wouldn't want to look at it for very long, they are after all, one LED that is battery powered.Having said that, I didn't buy two for this purpose. I bought them to illuminate the path on the way from the house to the garage, and the passage way between said house and garage where we keep the wheelie bins. I was fed-up with bruised shins at night by bumping into things left on the path and also not being able to see properly when taking the rubbish out. These spotlights are perfect for this task; they illuminate the areas easily enough to see where you are going and what you are doing. The motion sensors are excellent, activating the spotlight as soon as I come into view some 10 metres away. Being battery powered means no messing around with mains wiring outside, or the expense of an electrician; just fix them to the wall and job done. It remains to be seen however, if the claim of 1 year's battery life on average rings true, particularly as we have two very active cats at night! My only gripe is the way it fixes to the wall. The supplied screws are nowhere near long enough and I discarded these straight away and used some more suitably longer ones. I also would have preferred to be able to fix screws through the mounting bracket rather than slotting the lights down onto the protrudung screw heads - it just doesn't seem as secure as it should be.

Great little light!
Although I initially thought this light a bit pricey, it's proven well worth the money. I installed it on the back of a gate, to illuminate some very dark steps at the top of my garden. An electrician would have charged a small fortune to install a mains-operated light at this location, due to the distance from the house, and the terrain. It's worked well for the last five months. I did have one little scare where I thought it was faulty, as it started acting a bit strangely, e,g, not coming on until I was a couple of feet away, which defeated the purpose of having it. I then spotted the reason for this - water in the sensor, which was my fault - I hadn't screwed it shut tightly enough. Once I'd drained the water out and taken care to close it properly, I had no such problems. We've had a number of storms and heavy downpours in the meantime, and there has been no further ingress of water.Battery life is pretty good, but don't make the mistake I did. I originally put cheap, pound shop batteries in, which conked out in less than six weeks. I replaced them with decent, heavy duty batteries. This was in mid-July, and they're still going strong. The light itself isn't as powerful as a mains-operated security light, but this isn't an issue for me. It provides adequate illumination for safe passage at night, which is what I need it for. It is also reliable, coming on when it's meant to, and switching off within 30 seconds of the last detected movement, so it doesn't waste your batteries.I would definitely recommend this light to anyone who is looking for a cheap, reliable alternative to installing a mains-powered light. It can be attached to any suitable surface, wood or concrete, and is far more reliable than solar lights, which don't work too well during winter months. All in all, an excellent product.
