Great machine, for beginners and experienced sewers alike!
It's important for me to mention that I do not know how to sew with a machine yet. I've always done my alterations by hand. I decided to invest in a good quality semi basic machine that I could have for years to come. This is the perfect machine for that. It's not too complicated, it's very easy to use, it was a good value for the money, And the black color is very fun. I have a friend coming over this weekend to show me how to use it and I'm excited to learn more about how to sew! It offers multi speed functions and a high quality stitch. It has a nice way to it and it's very sturdy and well-made. The machine came with many accessories as part of the bundle and I don't know how to use any of them, but I'm excited to learn.

Not for absolute beginners
I had to have this machine serviced about a month and a half after I bought it. I take most of the responsibility for this, mostly because I tried to sew through a particularly thick section of vinyl. HOWEVER, there's a few things I'd like to mention in the hopes of helping out folks like me who are looking for a first, domestic sewing machine.Negatives-1. This machine did not come with a paper user manual.I'm ok using a PDF as a manual, if just given that I have my cell phone with me any time I'm using this machine. However, the manual is for several machines in the "heavy duty" line, so not all of the pictures are accurate to this machine specifically. Also, the PDF is set up so that one page is in English, then the next 3 pages are reproductions of the English page in various other languages, so it is very difficult to navigate the PDF by page number, even going off of the table of contents.2. The user manual is not comprehensive. This is my first domestic sewing machine, so although there is a flyer in the package which shows you how to thread the upper and lower tensions for the first time, there are still a bunch of stitches on the machine which I haven't used and are not in the manual. There is a stitch guide on Singer's website, but it is all images which you must then click to get a basic description. Basically, it feels like I have the figure out length, width, and tension for about 75% of the stitches on my machine on my own. I wouldn't really have a problem with this either, were it not for the fact that just getting the timing fixed on this machine starts at $60, which makes me reluctant to mess around with settings.3. Not actually "heavy duty" by a lot of definitions.Essentially, it seems a more accurate description of this is something along the lines of, "Heavy [Domestic] Duty". As in, the machine has handled materials like vinyl and canvas for me, but the timing went completely off pretty much immediately after hitting a single section of vinyl which was twice as thick as the rest. The folks at the repair shop said that I shouldn't even be doing vinyl or canvas at all on this machine, and that pretty much anything I might consider heavy duty should be done on an industrial machine.4. Not a ton of accessories. It seems like common practice for manufacturers to only include the bare-minimum of feet. You get four feet with this machine, which is great, but there are a lot of other little accessories which it seems the manufacturer could have included extra or spare, just for convenience's sake. Stuff like the spool holders and bobbins. Maybe the bobbin case cover.Positives1. Easy to use once you've got the basics.Takes less than 30 seconds for me to reset the thread to begin sewing again. Automatic threading tool is great. Bobbin case is easily accessible. Seems like all the switches and dials and levers are manual and easy to find.2. Plenty of features. While I mentioned earlier that the machine may have too many stitches for me as a beginner, it also has more directly useful features like the automatic buttonhole setting and the button sewing setting. I already mentioned the automatic threading tool. The machine also has an LED light built-in, which is nice if just because I shouldn't have to worry about changing it nearly as soon as I would have to if it were an incandescent.3. Sturdy, yet portable.Really the biggest reason I went with this machine in the first place, and it has not disappointed me in that regard. Metal frame and stainless steel surface in the sewing area make me feel a whole lot less anxious about using this machine in general (I'm a big guy with big, shaky hands, and I haven't managed to poke myself with the needle or scratch the stainless surface or knock the machine over... yet). I work in steel and can imagine the sturdier frame also contributes to less frequent timing adjustments, but I don't know that for sure. It came with a basic cover and has a carrying handle, which made it relatively easy to get to the repair shop.
