The "perfect" Sailor nib, right on your fingertips.
This nib can write a few words before being dipped again. But if you're going to use your Hocoro dip pen often, get the separate feed part as well because it'll enable you to write for almost an entire A5 page before thinning. It's very consistent, not too wet or dry, but has noticeable feedback. It's almost like writing with a sharpened pencil that's been used for a bit. It's definitely not for everyone, but its performance is great! IMO, this nib is the perfect balance of ink flow, line width, and writing feedback. The feedback gives me a feeling of control; the pen won't just glide out of control in a spidery mess when I write. It lays down a controlled amount of ink, meaning I can use a wider variety of inks, from thin, dry, wet, or thick ones on all kinds of paper. It's also just thick enough to show off handwriting while hiding spidery penmanship. This makes it a very good all-rounder. It's such a refreshing experience for a fountain pen to write well on both quality and cheaper paper at a moment's notice. I love my Lamy and Pelikan Mediums, but I can only use FP friendly paper or else it'll turn it into a watery mess! I get it. American stationery sucks because we don't really use FPs anymore.Only drawback is that it won't feature an ink's properties like shading (color transitions) or shimmer (glitter ink) as readily compared to a Lamy, Pelikan or Pilot Medium.Line wise, it's slightly wider than a European Fine but still narrower than a E Medium. Compared to other pens, it has more feedback than Sailor's 14K and 21K gold nibs. Slightly stiffer than the 14K and very stiff compared to the 21K nib. Some line variation is possible with a bit of pressure but careful. It also has more feedback than both Pilot or Platinum pens. But, this one is more well behaved. It's more in line with a Kaweco Sport nib, but slightly "rougher".Reverse writing almost feels like an extra fine, and it's not too scratchy, suprisingly!I love Sailor pens. But my main issue is that they're so stingy with their Medium nibs outside of select Japan only models, or their expensive gold nibbed pens. Their Medium is the perfect one for me compared to 8 other brands that I've used. For it to be in a semi-affordable package (As an American anyway!) is a gamechanger! Sailor pens are respected for a reason, but one has to shell out serious dough to get the full breadth of their nibs with their Pro Gear line. But now? Someone can pick up a High Ace Neo and this little beauty for less than $30 USD combined and feel like fountain pen royalty! Nib swapping is easy too!Outside of looks, if you want a Medium nib that's good in all scenarios but don't want to shell out for a Pro Gear, give this pen a try!
