Works great - documentation needs work
The Olimex kit works great and is a good value for the money. The attached picture shows it up and running on the island in our kitchen. I have no medical background so the waveforms are a bit of a mystery that will require some research. It was pretty much plug and play if you have had some experience with Arduino shields. The Quick Start guide is 18 pages long. Almost a page is well written description of the history and comparison to the Maple and Pinguino boards. If you buy the complete kit you can skip it. There is quite a bit on programming the Arduino clone that comes with the kit or using the shield with other Arduino boards. You can skip that too as the Arduino clone that comes in the kit is pre-programmed for you, Section 5 (hardware) of the quick start can also be skipped unless you did not buy the complete kit. Since I have no medical background I was a bit confused by the three electrodes They are labeled R,L and D. The R and L are right and left arms - see pic. The D or DRL (Driven Right Leg)) lead is designed to provide noise rejection and is commonly connected to a leg where a signal is fed in (driven) that helps cancel out noise. It worked for me with the D electrode connected to an ankle. To use the other electrodes you will need to buy some adhesive electrodes to connect to the electrode clips - they are of course available from amazon. Since this device is not rated by UL or any other group safety might be a concern. Any time you connect an electrical device with wires to your body it is a safety concern. The Olimex kit runs off 5 volts that comes from the USB connector so if everything is working correctly it should not be a problem. Disconnecting the laptop from the 120v charger provides another level of safety but nothing is completely safe.
