A Pretty Sweet Kit, MY Take On It (Artist's view) Company Went Extra Mile
I am an artist. I also love peacocks. One of my biggest pet peeves is peacocks that don't look like peacocks. I will be doing my review from that perspective also including beginner artists who might not care as much for realism as I do.HOW IS THIS PACKEDLet me tell you, very seldom am I as impressed with packing of products where I am in awe. This is one of those times. This kit is fantastic. The resin peacock is packed in FOUR LAYERS of specially cut foam pieces that protect this thing beautifully. I am truly in awe. The other parts are all housed in protective plastic case so you can store them for future use too. On top of that, the entire box, beautifully sealed with tape is also shrink wrapped. When your delivery people are as annoying as ours and dump packages in pouring rain with no plastic bags this is a BIG deal. This package was left under pouring rain spout and was untouched with water soaking in. THAT is high class thought put into this kit.STATUEI am going to confess here. I got this because it is the most realistic statue of a peacock to paint that I have come across. The proportions are excellent and the detail is beautiful. This is resin and it can break if dropped. But it is gorgeous. I have no intention of painting it with the color paints in the kit.PAINTS AND QUALITYThe paints in this kit are opaque and they are a satin finish. They need a few coats for even coverage. The bottles have ball bearings in them to help blend the pigments and solids. Another AMAZING feature. No one seems to do this anymore and it is frustrating. These guys went the extra mile again. The colors are kind of grade school in type. They are not really peacock colors. I will be using chameleon paints over color base on all of this statue. It will be painstaking and take a long time, but it is worth it to me.DIAMONDS AND GLUEThis comes with dark blue diamonds and glue for the center of each feather eye. I don't plan to use them, but I will see if they work when the painting is done.MANUALAgain the company went a little extra and put lots of pictures and close ups in color. Excellent directions well done.THE BOTTOM LINEI love this statue. Although I plan to use completely different paints, these will work for those who are not as picky colorwise.MY RATINGFIVE STARS. Wow, this statue is perfect. I am looking forward to getting my chameleon paints in play and start doing detail work. I will try to post updated photos.PHOTOI took photos of the statue with the blue from the kit so you can see it. I will update with future photos once I get going on this.

Very Nice
I haven't finished painting it yet, but the paint is very nice and goes on well and covers evenly. The actual peacock is very well made.

Different, easier than I expected, creativity and variations encouraged, plentiful supplies
When I first opened this peacock kit I felt a little intimidated -- I'm not a particularly skilled painter, even in paint by number terms -- but the figurine is designed to make the actual painting look a lot better than I can paint. The figurine is white and has lots of 3D detail that helped guide my brush to make cleaner lines that I could ever make on a flat surface. The paints are thin and slightly translucent, which is a feature not a defect. It made it easy for me to layer different mixes of colors to get subtle effects because the bottom coat shows through a bit. Where I just wanted to use one coat -- such as on the tree trunk and branch -- the paint covered the white well. I chose to apply the paint a bit thinner in some places, helped by the 3D texture, so instead of a flat uniform brown I got "barky" color variation that I prefer. The directions provide three different color designs and a list of how to mix paint to get the colors, so you could paint one of the designs exactly as shown. The instructions aren't the usual totally detailed "this color here. That color there" step by step chart of most paint by number kits, but I think there's enough information to make things clear. The 3D of the figurine shows where the lines would be on a usual kit -- the feathers have valleys and heights to guide you, and a bump where the "eye" goes, for example. The bit around the actual eye on the peacock's face that the samples show as white is indented so it's easy to paint a smooth line of face feather color without wandering into white territory. The amount and variety of paints is generous. They come in little vials that you need to shake well each time before mixing/using the color, and the ratios seem to refer to drops from the vial. The ratio I used for the trunk/branch was a total of 13 drops and it was more than enough to cover the entire areas. The kit includes all the colors mentioned in the three example cover schemes, plus a fluorescent blue and a light purple that aren't on any of their color mixing lists. The magic diamonds come in two sizes with enough of each to use on all the feathers.I wanted to keep the kit supplies in the clear plastic box so I used a shallow plastic tray from a grocery store item (washed and dried, of course) and it worked great. The paint dries pretty quickly after being applied, so I did end up using the damp sponge and parchment paper supplies to keep the edges of my mixed paint from drying up. I kept a damp paper towel nearby too, to wipe off any "creativity" that was unintended or just didn't look good to me after I tried it on purpose. There was often a slight bit of color left on the figurine after wiping it with water; I could get rid of that by wiping with alcohol (as the instructions mentioned for removing dry paint) or just leaving it -- the first thin layer of paint I applied on top hid it completely. In short, I had a wonderful time painting this peacock, and ended up with color combinations and effects that are exactly what I wanted, a unique piece of art. The painted figurine turned out much better than my skill level predicted. I highly recommend this kit!
