Deep init
What I liked:+ very deep+ Christian Bale+ Beautiful imagery+ Thought provoking+ Great if you are religious+ Dreamlike, immerses you in the world of the american dream, and after watching you feel as if you have been transported, and understand that worldly things are not going to bring ultimate joy and meaning, all is ultimately meaningless strivingDon't watch if:- If you don't like pretentious dialogue- If you don't like thinking- If you don't strive for meaning in life but like to take it at face value- You only watch action films- If you watch reality TV- If you are sleepy-If you are cynical

I'd have liked this more when I was younger and sweeter.
I loved elements of this. It's certainly beautiful. If you have some knowledge of occult/spiritual/religious practices/secrets there's a lot in it for you to comb through. HOWEVER. Everyone was just too rich. It was cliche rich. Blondes and suits and cash and a very dull, pedestrian kind of hedonism. There was such a disparity between the depth of feeling and the lack of invention in the lives of the characters. People who think like that get a bit weird with it. Just sayin'. x

"There are no principles, just circumstances" - Tonio.
This is certainly not an easy film to watch, but if you're at ease with the prior two movies in this trilogy (Tree of Life and To The Wonder), then the style and composition of this work will prove familiar and yet unsettling. Moving from the canvas of nature in the prior tales, via the wilderness at the beginning of this piece, Malik unfolds a story of being lost amidst a world of desire and transitory gratification through a man, who due to his past, knows that there is a deeper need to quell.Set amidst the fleeting social world of Hollywood, the disquieting nature of the piece derives from its candid, constant movement through the peripheral nature of what passes as 'connection' - in both relational and spiritual terms - whilst seeking to jar these throughout with shards of something more transcendent in nature breaking upon the thoughts and the through the memories of the central character.I found the work's approach both disturbing and inspiring - in spite of all the inner numbing our world provides, a higher reality still calls to the appetite for eternity in our hearts, and this trilogy shows how so often beauty and true affection can provoke us towards satisfying the deepest thirst.Malik has only been a recent discovery for me, but if you enjoy his work, this is certainly worth a watch, and deeper consideration.

Not everyone's cup of tea
Quite a unique movie. It's arty, moody, creative film making. Close up shots. Angst. Landscapes. Silence. Hedonism.Dialogue is mainly thought.I can understand why others say this movie is boring, I also can see why others love it.This film asks the viewer to make their own conclusions, and is meant to provoke self-thought about our own lives in comparison. It's certainly different.

Excellent, Poetic, Artistic & Cinematic
Poetic, artistic & cinematic, filmed with graceful style, so slow.Christian Bale, [as you may not have seen him act before], and Brian Dennehy are outstanding.Stars Cate Blanchett and Natalie Portman.Seems to be dealing with grief, and a man finding himself in Hollywood/LA.Wonderful locations: desert, sky, sea, city & office interiors.

Terence Malick is America's greatest living film-maker
Terence Malick is America's greatest living film-maker. This film (like much of his recent work) is as much a work of philosophy -- or more precisely, theology -- as it is a "movie" (in the standard sense of the word). It is the closest we have to a visual (if highly abstract) representation of Augustine's Confessions. Those with an interest in philosophy and theology should find it intriguing at the very least. I loved it.

Oh dear
The film made me feeling empty just like the main character . Finding solace with women , how lucky. Not for me and the cast was unable to lift my spirits which is a pity , there was some top names , never mind
