David Lynch: The Air Is on Fire (Book and CD's) Hardcover – April 15, 2007

This book is beautiful, a large coffee table size book of color reproductions of Lynch's work. It includes an audio interview on two CDs. I just got the book today, so I have only skimmed it so far. It's similar to "Images" which has been out of print for years, and goes at auction for $100 to $300 when you can find it. I can't believe the low price on this wonderful book.

Imprescindible.

Easily a 5 star book....if 29 pages weren't missing. Yup, my copy jumps from page 196 to 225...with nothing inbetween. According to the transcript in the front of the book there should be stills from Blue Velvet, Wild at Heart and a bunch of other stuff here. Honestly, the collection is so great it's STILL worth the price. I just didn't get what I paid for.

Listening to David Lynch's audio conversation coming with the book "The Air is on Fire", thinking how wonderful it is to have this detailed, intimate contact with the artist describing his drawings. I wish this would exist from all artists, so i could get into their heads and see with their eyes.Still listening, i kept thinking that on these 2 cds Lynch is not telling us so much about his art, keeping the most interesting parts to himself, talking about the size of the pieces, the material used and so on - like if i would care.Since most of his work is profoundly disturbing, what i wished to hear on the audio was the "Why" of each piece instead of the "How"... but i guess one cant give so generously and reflect about the personal stories and all the inner work going on at the time of creation of each piece in this book. Still a nice time in company of Lynch.

The Air Is on Fire - This is a great collection of David Lynch's sketches, paintings, and photography. The collection spans his career with early works up until the present day Inland Empire. If any of you missed out on picking up a copy of "Images" before it went out of print like me, and didn't want to spend hundreds of dollars trying to pick up a copy, The Air Is on Fire is highly recommended! The prints of the art work are high quality and it even comes with a double disc CD of an interview with David Lynch discussing the many different sketches, paintings, and photos. So buy it, before this goes out of print and your screwed...again.

Unfortinately unable to go to Paris for his exhibition the catalogue on David Lynch'work is great in its different approaches to his art. I also find it excellent to not include any DVD's only spoken interview. Back to the roots of David as a painter. I bought it together with David Lynch Catching the big Fish, meditation, Consciousness and creativity. Very good mix!!! In that there are only texts with insights to his creative mind an process.

This book is an amazing collection of the art of David Lynch.It is a MUST for any Lynch fan. Each page contains truly moving images.With the discs Lynch walks you through the majority of the works.Fantastic.

A beautiful and all-encompassing book by the one and only David Lynch

Was ist das? Es ist groß, es ist schwer, es ist gelb-schwarz und voller bizarrer Bilder ...? Richtig: THE AIR IS ON FIRE von David Lynch. Der Band begleitet zwar eigentlich eine Ausstellung, kommt aber mehr als Künstlerbuch denn als regulärer Katalog daher: Mehrseitige Vorsätze, unterschiedliche Papiersorten und ein stark eingeschränkter Apparat zeigen an, daß der Meister höchstselbst seine Vorstellungen verwirklichen konnte. Entsprechend wird mit den Abbildungen nicht eben gegeizt.Der Band gliedert sich in drei Teile: Drawings, Paitings und Fotographs, wobei sich kaum Überschneidungen zu dem 1994 bei Schirmer/Mosel veröffentlichten Buch IMAGES ergeben. Keines der Kapitel ist mit ein paar Worten zu beschreiben oder gar "auf einen Nenner zu bringen". Entsprechend groß gestaltet sich die Bandbreite an Namen, die einem beim Durchblättern in den Sinn kommen: Basquiat, Bacon, der junge Hockney ... die Auswahl muß unvollständig bleiben. Lynchs Fotoserie "Distorted Nudes" beispielsweise, die auf eingescannten und per Photoshop veränderten Aktfotos aus Großvaters Zeiten beruht, gemahnt vage an Oelze, Bellmer und Witkin, ohne dabei die eigene Linie aus dem Auge zu verlieren: Extrem verfremdete, zum Teil fragmentarisierte Körper vor dunklen Hintergründen. Die Zeichnungen hingegen präsentieren einen eher verspielten, zum Teil knüllebunten Lynch, der buchstäblich alles mit Strukturen versieht, was ihm gerade unter die Finger kommt: Notizblätter, Post-it-Zettel, Servietten, Streichholzbriefchen. Die abstrakten Konstrukte erinnern oft an Piktogramme oder Hieroglyphen; manch einem wird auch die Ästhetik schräger Schallplattenhüllen aus den frühen 1980er Jahren in den Sinn kommen. Dann wieder bricht Lynch mit sensiblem Bleistiftstrich in figurale Bereiche auf und skizziert bühnenartige Landschaften, auf denen halbfertige Lebewesen unverständlichen Tätigkeiten nachgehen. Wer schon immer wissen wollte, wo die bizarren Zeichentrickideen aus Lynchs frühen Kurzfilmen herkommen, wird hier zweifelsohne fündig werden. Ähnlich rätselhaft gestalten sich auch die Gemälde, deren stumpfer Farbauftrag mitunter an die Malerei des Informel erinnert: Grauschwarz hingeklatschte Farbflächen, auf denen sich seltsame Spuren, manchmal auch Worte finden lassen. Oft machen seltsame Figuren seltsame Dinge, die durch die Erläuterungen auch nicht klarer werden: "Bob loves Sally until she is blue in the Face" ... Dann wieder tummeln sich ranzige Körper vor cremefarbigem Interieur, und ein mit einem Messer versehener Mann fragt eine halbnackte Frau: "Do you want to know what I really think?" Die Antwort lautet natürlich "NO", wie hätte es auch anders sein können. Nur unter den Fotographien findet man am ehesten alte Bekannte wieder, Bilder aus der Serie um zerstörte Industrieanlagen beispielsweise, oder im Halbdunkel verborgene nackte Frauen. Doch auch hier ist die Fülle imposant.Kurioses Detail am Rande: Während sich Lynch bis heute weigert, eine seiner DVDs mit einem Audio-Kommentar zu versehen, hat er diesen nun dem vorliegenden Buch beigegeben: Auf zwei CDs kann man sich Anekdoten und Erinnerungen zu den Bildern anhören, die zum Teil auch transkribiert wurden. Ebenfalls enthalten ist ein ins Englische übersetztes Gespräch zweier deutscher Medienwissenschaftler. Ansonsten aber werden auf den 450 Seiten ausschließlich Bilder gezeigt, viele im Originalformat und grundsätzlich nicht datiert. Wer Lust hat, vor Lynch auf die Knie zu fallen, kann das hier mit Fug & Recht machen. Ansonsten gilt: Die Kunstbücher von heute - die Sammlerstücke von morgen ...
