Exactly what I expected and needed - Good for hobby use
Regarding complaints here about the tolerances and movement of the vise: It's true - this is not a $600 professional machining vise. The vise is made in China and does have loose tolerances, but with a few simple modifications I think you will have a quality product that you can use for relatively precise work on your drill press. Harbor Freight has roughly the same exact vise in their stores, but I chose this one because it looked beefier. The two adjustment cranks have set-screw collars where they meet the body of the vise. It would be wise to put a thin washer in between the set screw and the body - this will make the vise more precise and also it will move smoother. You might also want to put another one behind the plate. The grease that the vise arrives with is junk - it is only used because it prevents corrosion during storage/shipping. Clean the vise with oil and get some good lithium grease or something that will allow it to move smoothly.Adjust the rail guide screws and re-grease the rails. While the two aluminum adjustment crank handles are made out of cheap cast aluminum, I don't think it is possible to break them. You shouldn't be cranking on them too hard anyway. If you need 0.001" precision then get a professional vise. For the rest of us that won't spend $600 on a hobby this will do just fine. For me, it is money well spent.

Great value for the price
Overall, a great value for the price.NOTE: This is the same chinese made unit sold other places for more notedly $$.As stated in other reviews, the unit comes covered in cosmoline ( sticky, gooey thin grease to keep it from rusting on the slow boat over the ocean from country of manf) you will need to take a few minutes and clean it thoughly. Its best to remove the various parts and clean it with brake/carb cleaner.Following that, the unit works very well. Its not super high quality but for the garage or very basic machining ops on a drill press, and within its size constraints (kinda small), it works better than expected, is tight, sturdy and has performed flawlessly thus far!

Good vise once cleaned up.
This is a heavy duty small adjustable vice. It is coated with black grease when it comes. It needs to be completely taken apart and cleaned over a small tub with brake cleaner or WD40. When you have it apart make sure there are no burrs on the machined edges. If so, just file them off with a small fine tooth metal file. When putting it back together you can adjust it so it moves freely without any slop. Then put a small amount of WD40 on the moving parts. Once you get this done it is a very nice moving vise. I like mine and think it is a good value. It works very good for an 80% job if you go slow and take your time.

I got pretty much exactly what I expected
Well, it is what it is. You can read the reviews and make your own assumptions, that's what I did and figured I would give it a try despite some negativity. For the $60 I paid for it, I got pretty much exactly what I expected. This thing ships loaded in Chinese packing grease so yes, you do need to completely disassemble it and thoroughly clean it before use. The ways on mine also had quite a few burrs, and the machine work on the ways' flats was very unfinished. I cleaned it up with a file, polished the sliders, lubed the ways and spindles with a combination of wd40 and automatic transmission fluid, and got it running fairly smooth, far from perfect. The set screws are junk, I replaced mine with metric bolts, I don't recall the thread size. Also, the dial handles are a plastic barrel around a pot metal post that's pressed into the cast aluminum - one of mine broke off before I even got to use it. It's still 100% usable it's just a little tricky. All that said, the only reason it's a 3 star instead of a 2 is because I was able to finish my part with decent, 100% functional, accuracy. Therefore, I can't bash it too much. It's really rough around the edges but with patience and ALOT of prep/set up time, you can get it operational and hold a .006 +/- or so tolerance if you are very tedious about it. Would I buy another one? Probably not. Is this a high precision cross slide that you could use everyday to produce machine shop quality parts? NO. Is this a viable option for a cross slide that can accomplish light duty aluminum milling on a drill press with moderate accuracy for a fraction of the cost of industrial equipment? Absolutely. Take this review for what it's worth, and purchase with caution and understand what you're buying.

Absolutely a Great Milling (X-Y) Vise for the Price
Like other reviewers have stated, this is a great X-Y vise for the price once you clean it up and tune the slop out of it. Also like others, I used brake pad cleaner and white lithium grease clean this up. It doesn't take too long to take apart, clean, and then put back together. This bolts to your drill press table or can be clamped using the drill press vise grips. I tried both methods and bolting was more stable and true. I used this for cutting slots into an aluminum frame so I can make a wall mounted tablet. There is some side/lateral chatter with the vise but going slow helps minimize it. After all, this is a $70 X-Y vise on a drill press. Previously, I used a hand-held Dremel tool for this project. This X-Y vise (plus the grips) worked great and as a side benefit I have all of my fingers this time. Well worth it!

Buen producto.
En general la prensa llegó en buen estado y cumple su función primordial, aunque el tornillo principal de la prensa presenta algo de juego que al montar en taladro se escucha vibración.

Good drill press vise that needs a serious tune up right out of the box.
Nice item, definitely a nice addition to a drill press for small milling applications or just to be able to adjust your material for drilling without unclamping it from the vise and moving it around manually every time. I have a few mill bits on order too and am anxious to try this out for milling, after doing the mod described below:The vise is very rough out of the box because the sliding/mating surfaces are not cleaned/surfaced after machining. Some of the baked on finish/paint also ended up on these surfaces that were supposed to be bare metal, thus creating a slighly uneven movement of the vise. I took the whole thing apart and sanded all the sliding/mating surfaces with 120 grit sand paper until close to a mirror finish, removing all the machining marks and paint that leaked over onto the rails at the factory. I then replaced the heavy packing oil which was coating the insides of the vise with light "3 in 1" oil. The vise operated a lot better afterwards and can be made a lot more precise that way (tip: this is sold under the name Shop Fox on the US site, with far more reviews, some of which mention the mod described above).I give this item four stars because you need to put some elbow grease into it to make it a lot better... but the base product is still pretty good. When I bought it, Amazon.ca was selling it for $83.99, which was less than Amazon.com after conversion... the regular price seems to be $104 now.CAUTION: This vise will only work well with 10" or bigger drill presses. My drill press is an 8" and it barely fits and may not be used for bigger pieces of material or with big drill bits... I'll have to upgrade to a higher drill press with more clearance to accommodate this vise properly.

GREAT FOR DYI BEGINNERS
wHEN i RECEIVED THIS UNIT, IT WAS JUST AS OTHERS HAVE SAID- COATED WITH GREASE IN A PLASTIC BAG AND WITH SOME PAINT SPATTER. But I found this quite good, especially as a beginner: taking it apart and reassembling helped me to learn the various intricacies of the vise. The unit cleaned up extremely well and with relative ease and I am enjoying it. It is solid, weighty and fluid. brien
