Diamond Head DU-109 Ukelele - White
I purchased this to compare to the Hola! HM-21 ukelele. For a little over $30, it is an inexpensive investment in an entry-level Soprano ukelele. The fit & finish is very nice, with glossy white paint and black bridge & fretboard. The body is narrower and more elongated than that of the HM-21. The DU-109 has geared machines and a nice contrasting ring around the sound hole. I play guitar and am just learning & dabbling with the ukelele. The sound is OK, and it seems replacing the included strings with Aquila's may be the way to go to achieve the best sound. These ukes are available in 11 different colors. So far I have the DU-100 (black) & DU-109 (white) I plan on ordering one of each to decorate a wall.UPDATE 3/20/14: Received the Diamond Head DU-103 (orange) yesterday, and the DU-108 (purple) ukeleles today. The build quality and paint is very good, however, be advised that the purple paint is EXTREMELY dark, appearing almost black under normal lighting. It only shows up like the photo if you have it in sunlight, under an extremely bright light source, or hit it with a flash. I would suggest that the manufacturer select a lighter shade that shows up as purple under normal lighting.Update 3/22/14: Received five more Diamond Head ukes today. The DU-101 (brown), DU-102 (red), DU-104 (yellow), DU-105 (green), and the DU-110 (pink). Only two more to go! All arrived in great shape and the colors are true to their Amazon photos. All of these ukes come with a painted, high-gloss finish, except for the DU-101 (brown). The DU-101 is finished with a matte brown stain that looks very nice. It also has different machines, with the string pegs being about twice the height of the others. It looks a little strange with the extended pegs but works fine. I assume they must have run out of the normal machines and used these as a substitute? I only have the DU-106 & DU-107 (light & dark blue) to go to complete the set for my wall display.Update 3/28/14: Received the DU-106 (light blue) & DU-107 (blue) ukeleles today. These were numbers ten & eleven, and completes my set of all eleven colors for my wall. Like the previous nine, the DU-106 & DU-107 are well made and have a nice glossy finish. I am impressed that I purchased eleven different models and was happy with them all. Now I have to find a deal on guitar hangers!

Great option for kids and beginners
This is our household's first ukulele. I knew I didn't want to buy a professional level, expensive instrument right off the bat, but I didn't want a toy either. I wanted a middle ground, inexpensive instrument that we wouldn't be out a lot of money as it got beat up by us trying to learn. I bought this for the whole family to learn and practice on, but mainly for my kids. They are on the younger side for starting to learn instruments, so their hands are still too small to play something larger like a mandolin or banjo. I have to say, I am pleasantly surprised at the sound quality for such an inexpensive uke! I did spend up for a set of Aquila strings that I saw suggested in other reviews, and those make a huge difference in how the instrument plays. Even with the strings that came with sounded pretty good though. I left them on for a while just while we all started to get the feel for it. It is fun to play and pretty easy to pick up, actually since there are a ton of informative videos online of how to play. The best part is watching my kids play and start learning to love creating music! This is a great option for kids and beginners, I'm so glad I found it!

Good for the price; good for a beginning student.
I bought this for my daughter who's started playing in an kids' (tweens) church group (Christian Uke!?!? -- as long as she's with good friends & off the streets, I'm happy.)This is good enough for her purposes.I did what some other reviewer suggested and changed out the factory strings for Aquila New Nylgut AQ-4 Soprano Ukulele Strings - High G - Set of 4. Whoa! Wasn't bad before, but sure is louder now; perhaps even a better sound. As an experienced amateur musician (brass, nothing with strings,) changing out the strings confirmed for me this: this model is *not* for anyone past -- perhaps even *at* -- an intermediate skill level.- quality of construction & assembly seems good all around- frets & body-end of string hardware all seem fine.- tuning pins are t.r.o.u.b.l.e. Each one's got it's own idiosyncratic behavior. 2 of them are mostly good; the other 2 have something elliptical (instead of circular) in how their components were formed. They've got some very uneven tensioning behavior. With the price of these things, I'm sure it would be better to upgrade than to replace the tuning pins.I've heard China has a "Button City," where most of the world's buttons are made. I think they must have a "Ukulele Village," too. My daughter received loaner uke of a different brand (same price range, avail on Amazon) until the one I bought arrived. While both instruments were in the house, I compared them and -- aside from paint differences -- found only cosmetic differences in the shape of the head. Otherwise were very similar. I wager all other ukes in this price range compare similarly.

Outstanding as a Toddler Guitar
If this rating was based on how much our toddler lives it, this ukulele would get 25 stars! The finish is a nice quality and so far has held up to getting minorly knocked around. It took a while to tune it, but once that was done, the sound has been really nice. One thing to note is that all the strings are plastic, so the sound is a bit different and not as rich if you are used to metal. Not a concern in this case as it works just great for what we need: a fun durable toy instrument.

EXCELENTE CALIDAD
The media could not be loaded.
