Porsche's record at the Targa Florio is legendary! 1967 saw the German team score the second of its five Targa Florio victories... with a 1-2-3 finish, no less. Three of the factory cars were powered by the proven 2.0 liter flat-6 cylinder engines and they fit into the Sport class. Another three cars with the new 2.2 liter 8 cylinder, by virtue of their larger displacement, fell into the Sports Prototype class where they would be facing some very stiff competition: Ford GT40, Ferrari 330 P3, and Type 2F. The 2.0 liter 910s in the Sports class driven by Cella/Biscaldi (#174), Elford/Neerpasch (#166), and Maglioli/Schutz (#184) created arguably the biggest buzz of the day by pushing their big brother, the more powerful 2.2 liter 910 in the Prototype class, all the way. Maglioli dropped out with engine trouble toward the end, but the #174 car took up the fight, holding station close behind the leading car #228 of Hawkins/Stommelen. Leo Cella and Giampiero Biscaldi eventually settled for first in class and second place overall, a remarkable result for the little Porsche, having outlasted and outperformed the best from Italy and America!
