Determined to show that their first ever victory at the famed Targa Florio was no fluke, Porsche showed up in force for the 51st running of the great race in 1967. They brought six of their newest weapon: the Porsche 910. Three were armed with the tried, tested and superb 2.0 liter flat-6 motors, while three challenged the race with the newer 2.2 liter 8-cylinder engine. With a 2.0 liter cut-off, the more powerful cars faced daunting sition in the form of Ford GT40, Ferrari P3 and Chaparral 2F prototypes. The grueling 44-mile long circuit was set, however, to chew up and spit out those who were not completely prepared. The Italian and American competition were soon laid up around the circuit, sidelined for any number of reasons, while Porsche stole the day! Umbert Maglioli and Udo Schutz were, by many accounts, the heroes of the day. The pair fought bravely, leaning heavily on the leading 8-cylinder 910 of Hawkins/Stommelen (#228), challenging for overall victory. Unfortunately for Maglioli, the wicked course around the island of Sicily wasn't playing favorites and his engine expired on the penultimate lap. Fortunately for Porsche, teammates Cella/Biscaldi (#174) and Elford/Neerpasch (#166) were close behind in 3rd and 4th places and able to ensure a Porsche dominated podium!
